Podcast: Kevin Day talks UEFA, Simon Jordan and Uncle Reg

Toughest fight yet: Palace fans demonstrating outside Selhurst Park last week against UEFA’s cruel and unjustified punishment for the club
Comedian, scriptwriter, author and all-round good bloke Kevin Day, pictured left, returns to our Under The Flyover podcast to explain and discuss the clear miscarriage that his club, Crystal Palace, has suffered at the hands of UEFA, and what they are going to do about it.
FA Cup-winners Palace ought to have automatically been included in the draw for the coming season’s Europa League.
But the bureaucrats running European football in Switzerland have decided that because of their rules on multi-club ownership, Palace should be demoted to the third-tier competition, the Conference League, with Nottingham Forest taking their place in the more prestigious competition.
Now Palace, and the club’s chairman, Steve Parish, will have their day in court – the independent Court for Arbitration in Sport – on August 11.
Will Palace win?
Day tells Under The Flyover: “The only person I’ve spoken to with any real insight is a lawyer who was responsible for the Bosman decision, the biggest game-changing decision in football history. And he said, ‘I’m not going to predict what’s going to happen at CAS, except they don’t always look at the legal minutiae. Sometimes, if you’re lucky at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, they will look at the moral decision here’.
“And he said whatever Palace did or didn’t do, he said the answer to the question is: ‘Is kicking us out of the Europa League a fair and proportionate response? And the answer to that is ‘No, it isn’t’.”
Hear more from the co-author of Unfit and Improper Persons, in a wide-ranging and fascinating interview that takes in Brian Clough, Simon Jordan, Spike Milligan and Kevin’s Uncle Reg – with important points for all fans of football, whatever club they might support.
