St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery (Ukrainian:Михайлівський золотоверхий монастир,Mykhaylivs’kyi zolotoverkhyi monastyr) is a functioningmonastery inKiev, the capital ofUkraine. The monastery is located on the right bank of theDnieper River on the edge of a bluff northeast of theSaint Sophia Cathedral. The site is located in the historic administrative Uppertown and overlooks the city's historical commercial and merchant quarter, thePodil neighbourhood.

Originally built in theMiddle Ages bySviatopolk II Iziaslavych, the monastery comprises the Cathedral itself, the Refectory ofSt. John the Divine, built in 1713, the Economic Gates, constructed in 1760 and the monastery's bell tower, which was added c. 1716–1719. Vincent Willem van Gogh (Dutch: [ˈvɪnsɛnt ˈʋɪləm vɑn ˈɣɔx] (listen);<ref group =note>The pronunciation of "Van Gogh" varies in both English and Dutch. Especially in British English it is/ˌvænˈɡɒx/van-GOKH or sometimes/ˌvænˈɡɒf/van-GOF. U.S. dictionaries list/ˌvænˈɡoʊ/van-GOH, with a silentgh, as the most common pronunciation. In the dialect of Holland, it is[ˈvɪnsɛnt fɑŋˈxɔx] (listen), with a voicelessV. He grew up in Brabant (although his parents were not born there), and used Brabant dialect in his writing; it is therefore likely that he himself pronounced his name with a Brabant accent:[vɑɲˈʝɔç], with a voicedV andpalatalizedG andgh.
