The study focuses on the transformation of the city considering the changes in the water management through the case study of Maredolce-La Favara and its functional and conceptual role in the suburban area, to demonstrate how it contributed to redefine the significance of water in the Norman age.
A transdisciplinary approach is proposed, through the contribution of different sources of the Arab-Norman age, with archaeological data and recently published archival documents.
The Maredolce-La Favara site is an emblematic case study for the analysis of the critical transition during which the city of Palermo moved from the status of the Kalbite madina to that of the Arab-Norman capital, following the Promotio Regia by King Roger II.
This site is still nowadays an extraordinary landscape and architectural palimpsest, in which water represents an element of continuity as evident in toponomy: the term Favara derives from the Arabic word fawwara, translated as “gushing spring”; Maredolce, the “sweet sea”, is a poetical reference to the extension of the artificial lake surrounding the palace. Water ensures continuity, but it also reveals the evolution of uses of the Maredolce lake and its urban function, after the construction of the palace by Roger II. The area, previously mainly exploited for irrigation in connection with pre-existing qasr, was transformed into a luxury royal solatium. Although nowadays dry, the still visible lake and island vestiges testify an exceptionally fine water architecture, which next research will explore.
