Research paper thumbnail of Learning from Hydraulic Venice Landscape. Adaptive Strategies and Resilience

Research paper thumbnail of The new significance of water in the construction of the early Norman age. The case of Maredolce-La Favara and its urban role in Palermo
NUME - Gruppo di Ricerca sul Medioevo Latino, IX Ciclo di Studi Medievali. Atti del Convegno, Firenze, 6-7 giugno 2023. ISBN 978-88-5548-311-7, 2023

The study focuses on the transformation of the city considering the changes in the water management through the case study of Maredolce-La Favara and its functional and conceptual role in the suburban area, to demonstrate how it contributed to redefine the significance of water in the Norman age.
A transdisciplinary approach is proposed, through the contribution of different sources of the Arab-Norman age, with archaeological data and recently published archival documents.
The Maredolce-La Favara site is an emblematic case study for the analysis of the critical transition during which the city of Palermo moved from the status of the Kalbite madina to that of the Arab-Norman capital, following the Promotio Regia by King Roger II.
This site is still nowadays an extraordinary landscape and architectural palimpsest, in which water represents an element of continuity as evident in toponomy: the term Favara derives from the Arabic word fawwara, translated as “gushing spring”; Maredolce, the “sweet sea”, is a poetical reference to the extension of the artificial lake surrounding the palace. Water ensures continuity, but it also reveals the evolution of uses of the Maredolce lake and its urban function, after the construction of the palace by Roger II. The area, previously mainly exploited for irrigation in connection with pre-existing qasr, was transformed into a luxury royal solatium. Although nowadays dry, the still visible lake and island vestiges testify an exceptionally fine water architecture, which next research will explore.

First to make the space in the lagoon area habitable, then not miss the game’s history, Venice was forced to fight for centuries and finally subdued temporarily some forces of nature. Venice created a legal apparatus that could handle extremely complex water planning at various scales, sharpened the technical ingenuity, and founded itself on a strong common interest: the survival and preservation of the lagoon. The aim of the article is to propose a brief excursus about the ‘Venice and waters’ case study, with a problem-solving approach. This lesson about a balance between anthropic needs and landscape preservation could be a useful point of view to look at the future of our coastlines in a long-time frame and a resil...

The analysis of the urban principle of the amphibious city is conducted in a historical perspective, from of Altinum to Torcellum and Rivoaltus settlements, considering its complex relation with amphibious infrastructures and landscape transformations, to be preserved nowadays. The first aim is to highlight that Venice urban principle is not an isolated case in the Mediterranean history, but a possible evolution of Roman and Middle Ages urbanization models in terms of adaptation. As a result, it represents one of the most extraordinary city-port archetypes in the Mediterranean space. Facing many environmental issues, the Venetian civilization was able to settle down in a salty lagoon and urbanize the harsh environment of its marshes, so demonstrating a high adaptive capacity. An interdisci- plinary approach is proposed, crossing new archaeological data, cartography, written sources and archive documents. The promotion of the venetian archaeology in the lagoon cultural landscape could also give a contribution to the safeguarding of the tangible and intangible heritage of the city.
