found:Indiana illustrators and hoosier cartoonists (website), viewed March 13, 2019(Charles Mills Sheldon; born in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, but lived in Des Moines, Iowa as a child; studied art in New York City under William Merritt Chase; in 1889 he traveled through the American South, illustrating articles for the Associated Press, the beginning of a long career in journalism; in the 1890-91 he studied in Paris; worked as illustrator for London's Pall Mall Budget (1892-1895) and as a correspondent for Black and White; spent the middle of the decade in South Africa and the Sudan; in 1898 he was in Cuba covering the Spanish-American war for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper and Black and White; illustrated To Herat and Cabul: a story of the First Afghan War by G.A. Henty (1901); covered world events in Egypt, South Africa, India, and elsewhere; during World War I he was a correspondent for British magazines and the Associated Press; died in London in 1928; his papers are at the College of William and Mary in Virginia)
