Rajongói gyakran arock and roll valódi királyának (The Real King of Rock ’n’ Roll) nevezték, utalvaElvis Presleyre , akit a „rock and roll királyának” neveztek. Karrierjének csúcspontja az1950-es évekre esik. Arhythm and blues -t ötvözte aboogie-woogie -val, olykorjazz ésgospel elemekkel átitatva, ez volt arock and roll kialakulásának egyik kulcsmozzanata. Adrogok és a kimerítő koncertezések hatására hamar kiégett,mint sok kortársa. A60-as években azegyházi zene felé fordult, és eltűnt a szórakoztatóipari miliőből. Ahetvenes években visszatért, de bár már nem tudott újat nyújtani, a közönség még mindig nagy rajongással fogadta nyilvános fellépéseit.
