  • Description
  • Colfax School honors Schuyler Colfax, who served as vice president of the United States during Ulysses S. Grant’s first term. The first Colfax School was a one room building located on Forward Avenue in the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh. It was replaced in 1873 by a large building at the corner of Beechwood Boulevard and Phillips Avenue that housed eight grades and a teacher training school. This was a white frame building with a little bell tower and no indoor plumbing. Beechwood Boulevard was just a farm road at that time and Phillips Avenue, named for the Phillips farm, was not paved. In 1911 the new Colfax No. 1 School was built. Colfax School serves the East Hills, Homewood, Point Breeze, and Squirrel Hill communities of Pittsburgh.
