Kumejima Tsumugi silk is woven in Kume island, about 100 km west of the main island of Okinawa, populated by about 7,000 people. One of the oldest Tsumugi weaving traditions, considered to be the archetype of Tsumugi and Kasuri weaving in Japan. All colors are dyed by organic dyes all indigenous to the island, such as, the roots of Catbrier tree, Barks of Okinawa yeddo hawthorn tree, Ash of Okinawa Malvaceae tree, Barks of Myrtle or Nakaharae tree, Leaf of Sugar cane, as well as mud dyeing
