Full Description

PRN 64909Factory and bottling plant of Lee and Green, who were large-scale manufacturers of all sorts of mineral water and soft drinks between about 1885 and the 1940s. The firm had three mineral water factories, at Bourne, Spalding and Sleaford. The Sleaford business was run by Mr George lee, who was also licencee of the White Hart Hotel in the town. They advertised themselves as "makers of high-class moneral waters", which included seltzers, soda waters, lemonade and ginger al; but their main business revolved around the market for natural and aerated spring water, which was growing in the last quarter of the nineteenth century (in tandem with the Temperance Movement, which was extremely strong in the Sleaford area). The main source of their Sleaford waters came from Guildhall Springs towards the west of the town (PRN 64911). The firm were at pains to point out that they never used the nearby river water during the manufacturing process.{1}The factory appears to have closed at the end og the 1940s. The buildings are depicted as garages on the Ordnance Survey 1:2500 map of 1970. The factory buildings, derelict but still bearing the name "Lee and Green" in large letters on the wall, was only demolished to make way for flats at the end of the 1980s.{1}{2}
