The ABC is committed to protecting your privacy.
The ABC manages your personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
This Privacy Policy explains how and why the ABC collects and uses your personal information, including:

Personal information is about you
Personal information is defined in the Privacy Act as information or an opinion about an identifiable individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable.
This includes whether the information/opinion is true or not and whether the information/opinion is recorded in material form or not.
The ABC collects personal information
The ABC may collect different types of personal information depending on the circumstances in which you interact with the ABC and its services. This may be collected either directly from you or provided to the ABC on your behalf or by third parties.
The types of personal information the ABC may collect include:
- name
- date of birth
- contact details (e.g. address, telephone number, email address)
- location information
- payment/transactional information
- device and browser information (e.g. device ID, IP address, cookies)
- behavioural data
- information about how you use our services
- any other personal information you provide when you make an inquiry, enter a competition, lodge a complaint, interact, or correspond with us.
The ABC collects this information so we can understand how to better serve our audiences. If you engage with the ABC using a social media sign-on (such as Meta, Google, or Apple), the ABC may receive other information about you, like your profile picture.
The ABC may ask for your sensitive information (like your ethnicity, political views, religious beliefs, physical and mental health, etc.) when it is necessary and relevant. The ABC will always ask for your consent when requesting sensitive information.
Purposes for collecting, holding, using and disclosing your personal information
The ABC collects, holds, uses, and discloses your personal information to deliver and improve the content and services the ABC provides. The ABC may collect, hold, use, and disclose your personal information:
- to deliver a personalised experience to you and our audiences
- to send you ABC Newsletters or other information that you request
- to create and monitor your ABC Account
- to assess or respond to claims, complaints, or conduct, or co-operate with investigations when required
- to combine and analyse data sets
- to perform research
- to establish, maintain, and manage the ABC’s relationship with you and our audiences
- to show you relevant promotions on ABC and non-ABC websites and apps
- to help the ABC better reflect and represent the diversity of the Australian community in its content, products, and the services the ABC provides
- to understand and analyse the composition, interests, and behaviours of the ABC’s audience
- to help the ABC monitor and improve ABC programs, websites, and apps
- to maintain security and cybersecurity
- for purposes directly related to any of the above or as permitted or required by law
- otherwise, if there is a reasonable expectation of a secondary purpose to these purposes or with your consent
The ABC does not sell or share your personal information for commercial gain.

The ABC protects your personal information
The ABC is committed to protecting the privacy and security of your personal information.
The ABC designs its services with your privacy in mind and have dedicated teams that look after the privacy and security of your information.
The ABC’s cybersecurity practices are aligned with the cybersecurity principles and guidelines outlined in the Australian Commonwealth Government ‘Information Security Manual’ (ISM). The ABC’s Cybersecurity Team stays across the latest developments in online security and works with experts in online safety.
Your personal information may be shared overseas
Some companies with which the ABC partners and shares data with may have storage locations outside of Australia, including Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, the UK, and the USA.
The ABC only discloses personal information to overseas recipients if the ABC is satisfied that the service providers have the appropriate controls in place to protect your personal information and only use your personal information for purposes the ABC authorises.
Seeking access to, and correcting, your personal information
You have the right to request access to, or seek the correction of, any personal information the ABC might have about you. However, deletion requests are subject to the ABC's record-keeping obligations, including the Archives Act 1983 (Cth).
The ABC will take reasonable steps to make appropriate corrections to personal information so that it is accurate, complete, and up to date.

The ABC will act in accordance with the APPs and provide you with a response to your access or correction request within 30 days.
Children's privacy
The ABC is committed to creating a safe and secure space for young people to enjoy their favourite ABC programs and other content. However, the ABC strongly encourages parents and carers to monitor their children’s use of ABC websites and apps.
The ABC will never knowingly use your children’s personal information for marketing purposes. Children’s ABC Accounts are automatically opted out of hashed email address sharing.

Additional privacy terms
Some ABC content and services are offered using non-ABC websites and apps.
For example, the triple j app allows you to send a playlist to YouTube Music.
These non-ABC companies and services have their own privacy policies and are not governed by the ABC’s Privacy Policy. You should always read and understand the privacy policy and terms and conditions of each service before deciding whether to accept them.
Feedback and concerns
If you would like to provide feedback, raise a concern, or if you believe the ABC has breached the Privacy Act, please contact the Privacy Team using theABC’s Contact Details below.
The ABC will attend to all questions and concerns in accordance with the Privacy Act.
If you are not satisfied with the ABC's response, or you believe that the ABC is in breach of the APPs, you can make a complaint to the Privacy Commissioner at the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).
