אזרים מהווים את קבוצת המיעוט האתנית הגדולה ביותר באיראן. מלבד אזרבייג'ן האיראנית היינו מחוזותמערב אזרבייג'ן,מזרח אזרבייג'ן,ארדביל וזנג'אן, אוכלוסיות אזריות נמצאות במספרים גדולים בארבעה מחוזות נוספים:המדאן (כולל קבוצות אתניות טורקיות אחרות כמו אפשאר, גרהגוזלו, שחסוואן[8][9]),קזווין,[10]מרכזי,[11]וכורדסתאן.[12] אזרבייג'נים במרכזי כולל חלקים וכפרים של קומיג'אן,[13] חונדב,[14] סאווה,[15][16] זרנדיה,[17] שאזנד,[18] ופרחאן.[15] בכורדיסטן, אזרבייג'נים נמצאים בעיקר בכפרים סביב קורווה.
אזרים היגרו והתיישבו במספרים גדולים אף במרכז איראן, בעיקר בטהראן,[19]קום[19][20][21] וכרג'.[22][23] וכן בחוראסאן.[19] קהילות מהגרים אזרבייג'ניות יוצגו על ידי אנשים בולטים לא רק בקרב מעמד הפועלים העירוני והתעשייתי, אלא גם בחוגים מסחריים, מנהליים, פוליטיים, דתיים ואינטלקטואלים.[19]
הערכות לגודל האוכלוסייה האזרית באיראן נעות בין 12 ל-23 מיליון. האיראנולוגיסטית ויקטוריה ארקלובה מאמינה שדוקטרינות פוליטיות בעקבותהתפרקות ברית המועצות גרמו ל"אינפלציה של האיראני האזרבייג'ני". היא מציבה את המספר בין 6 ל-6.5 מיליון.[דרוש מקור]
קבוצות תת-אתניות של האזרבייג'אנים בגבולותיה המודרניים של איראן לאחרמלחמות רוסיה–פרס והוויתור על הקווקז לרוסיה במאה ה-19, כוללות את השחסוואן,[24][25][26][27] את הקראפאפאק,[28] האיירומים,[24] הביאטים, הקאג'רים, הקראדגים[24][29] והגראגוזלו.[30]
