Talk: Potions (class)

Article Split[]
There should be one article about the class, and another about the art of brewing potions in general which goes into specific potions.Hufflepuff Half-Giant 08:06, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Potions or Alchemy?[]
I'm having difficulty understanding something should Potions be the correct term to describe such a class? I mean, while Snape only teaches brewing, I believe other things should be taught. Like the effects of the different ingredients, of how to properly extract ingrediants, and to have an understanding on the chemical reactions when ingredients are mixed. I mean, how will a potions master be able to create a new potion without knowing the effects and risks?
While Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures teaches you how to handle plants and animals, it doesn't teach you how to properly extract the fluids and body parts and stuff, at least, I wouldn't think so.
So my question is, shouldn't it be more properly named Alchemy?—The precedingunsigned comment was added byTeimoshi (talk •contribs).
I'm aware of that, but if you wanted to get technical and use allusions and what not... I just feel that it's incomplete, that Alchemy better defines the class with all aspects of the subject.—The precedingunsigned comment was added byTeimoshi (talk •contribs).
Not Sure....[]
I am not quite sure where to put this (it seems like it would require a lengthy naming to put under Known O.W.L.S;Unnamed Slytherin Girl in her Sixth Year in the 1996-1997 School Year... yeah) but the fourth Slytherin in Harry's Potions class must have been a girl (as we know Malfoy, Zabini and Nottwerein the class and Crabbe and Goyle are explicitly stated tonotbe in the class; and those are the only five Slytherin boys of Harry's year) but she is never named (though she is likely not to be Parknison or Bullstrode or Harry probably would've mentioned it being them). I thought it was something worth putting on the page but I'm not quite sure where it would go (BTS maybe?). Someone else's opinion on where to put it would be great!Pack Alpha of Europe 02:50, September 12, 2011 (UTC)
What I've always wondered about is that in many fandom stories, you see that potions replenish their potions ingredient stores every summer - I would have to read through the series again, but I don't think that was something that JKR did - so I have to wonder, did students have their own potion ingredients or help supply the classroom stores or was that totally up to Hogwarts, Severus and Slughorn when they were teachers?
If its something the students did, why not include it in the school supply list? Asking because I am working on a story that spans all 7 years and follows Hermione. LOL Working out her yearly schools supplies right now.

Lesson times[]
The "Lesson times" table, on this and other class articles, cites no sources. Without any evidence given, these detailed schedules appear to be fanfiction.Compare these tables with how little HP Lexicon has been able to deduce about Harry's schedules. I'd be ecstatic if detailed information like this could be proven from acanon source, but these "lesson times" sections are incredibly dubious and against wiki policy as they stand.Norikins 06:45, 14 November 2025 (EST)
