Phoenix Lament
Song information
- "Somewhere out in the darkness, a phoenix was singing in a way Harry had never heard before; a stricken lament of terrible beauty.[...] Harry felt, as he had felt about the Phoenix song before, that the music was inside him, not without ... How long they stood there, listening, he did not know, nor why it seemed to ease their pain a little to listen...[...] They all fell silent. Fawkes's lament was still echoing over the dark grounds outside."
- —Fawkes's lament after Dumbledore's death[src]
ThePhoenix Lament was a form of song expressed byphoenixes. Its tunes were known to touch thesoul, in positive or negative ways. Its most powerful performances were known to be present when the phoenix suffered emotional instability or distress, such as thedeath of its master.[2] This song was reputed to increase the courage of the pure of heart, and to strike fear into the hearts of the impure.[1]
History[]

Fawkes, who sang the lament
During the late1980s, as thanks for holding a specialcelebration in honour of him,Fawkes sang a phoenix lament for the collected crowd, all of whom were very impressed with it.[3]
WhenAlbus Dumbledore died, Fawkes once more sang a Phoenix Lament. It mesmerised all those gathered in the hospital wing:Harry Potter,Ron Weasley,Hermione Granger,Molly Weasley,Arthur Weasley,Ginny Weasley,Neville Longbottom,Luna Lovegood,Minerva McGonagall,Madam Pomfrey,Remus Lupin,Nymphadora Tonks,Bill Weasley andFleur Delacour. The Lament was broken when Minerva burst into theHospital Wing, bringing all who were listening to it back to sense, and subsequently discussing the events that had transpired. After Fawkes fell silent, he leftHogwarts, only returning for his master'sfuneral and then departing, presumably forever.[2]
