Biography[]

Early life[]

Cerberus Langarm was born into a family ofunknown wizarding descent likely sometime in the mid- to late20th century.

Career[]

Sometime after his seventeenth birthday, Cerberus joined theMinistry of Magic inLondon, where he worked as anOfficer in theMagical Law Enforcement Squad.[3][4] He passed intelligence regarding reports of creature-related incidents to theBeast Division in theDepartment for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures and lent his authority as a lawman toMathilda Grimblehawk andher partner. On occasion, he would also accompany them to secure the areas where wildbeasts was believed to be located in order to prevent further injuries,[5] and assisted the investigators of said division by making investigative inquiries and retrieving and examining evidence for them.[6]

At some point, Cerberus became anAuror in theBritish Auror Office, where he worked to captureDark wizards alongside among othersMordecai Berrycloth,Dorian Fungbury andPenelope Fawley, under the command of the Head of the department,Harry Potter, and became a celebrated Auror himself.[2] In less dangerous times with a low amount of dark magical activity to combat, however, Aurors would also be tasked with patrolling the perimeters of magical creature reserves to ward offpoachers.[7]

Following the outbreak of theCalamity, Cerberus joined theCalamity Management Team in the training of agents of theStatute of Secrecy Task Force who wanted to pursue the same career as himself. He would later host theForum Quorum, where his advice on the health benefits of proper rest before and after battle benefitedat least some members of theStatute of Secrecy Task Force in attendance. He would also eventually hold acourse in self-defensive spellwork that would give them an advantage in thefield.[8] He also was assigned with overseeing theResilience Training of the department'srecruitment programme.[9]

Personality and traits[]

Known to take great pride in his position as anOfficer of theDepartment of Magical Law Enforcement, Cerberus Langarm was a diligent, tough-minded individual, known to take his duties seriously and maintained an overall professional and largely courteous demeanour. Decisive in both thought and deed, he was above all else a man of action, often reaching for his wand to solve a problem rather than reason his way around it. One such example took place during his time working with theBeast Division, whereupon Cerberus agreed to help to investigate the secret owlery ofBilius Finbok, and was so quick to instinctively break down the door witha spell that he failed to realise that his co-workers had alreadyunlocked it.[10]

He also had a somewhat old-fashioned and naive outlook on magical creatures, employing a "curse-to-kill" policy similar to the one for which theMACUSA used to be well-known for back in the1920s when facing those he regarded as particularly dangerous.[10] He also possessed a dry wit, and was not immune to the finding of amusements at other people's expense, as seen when he delegated the task of going through the accounts ledger fromSlug & Jiggers Apothecary inDiagon Alley to Mathilda and her partner, telling her to "enjoy", despite the fact that he knew she was no more fond of paperwork than himself.[10]

Proud to a fault, he was also embarrassed about some of his own shortcomings and hence, reluctant to acknowledge them in front of other people, such as his fear of snakes.[10]

Magical abilities and skills[]

  • Auror skills: As an official Dark Wizard catcher, Cerberus Langarm was a very capable investigator trained extensively to become a well-respected expert in his line of work, and responsible for his fair share of captures and arrests of dangerousDark wizards over the course of his career at theAuror Office.
  • Martial magic: As an Auror, Officer Langarm was an accomplishedduellist, being well-versed in both offensive magic. A seasoned combatant, in addition to being aware of and invariably taking full advantage of the health benefits of proper rest before and after battle.[11] He was also highly resilient, having several techniques that he would use to help him recover from attacks quickly,[12] and very familiar with various defensive techniques, to the point of being able to determine which ones were best suited for environments out in the field, and which were better for interior use.[13]
  • Teaching skills: Langarm was able to lecture and otherwise effectively share his experiences with the the participants of theAuror recruitment programme working for theStatute of Secrecy Task Force in order to help them containThe Calamity.[2]

Etymology[]

His first name is the Latin version ofKerberos (Κέρβερος), thethree-headed dog which inGreek legend guarded the entrance to Hades. His last name appears to be a pun on "long arm", as in the idiomlong arm of the law, which is used to refer to the police.
