Alfred Enoch was born in Westminster, London, to English actor William Russell Enoch (1924-2024) and his second wife, Barbadian Brazilian physician Etheline Margareth Lewis; as William Russell, his father is best known for playing Ian Chesterton in the science fiction TV seriesDoctor Who from 1963 to 1965. Alfred attended Westminster School, a well-known public school in London. He is also fluent in Portuguese, and graduated with a degree in Portuguese and Spanish from the Queen's College, Oxford. In 2000 he was cast as Dean Thomas inHarry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, having previously being tested for the role ofLee Jordan, but being ultimately considered too young for the role. He appeared in seven of the eightHarry Potter films. He also voiced the character in video games.
After theHarry Potter films, Enoch appeared in a number of plays throughout London includingCoriolanus,Timon of Athens,Antigone,Happy New Year, andThe Ballard of Solomon Pavey. He played Bainbridge, the Bloody Guardsman, in theSherlockepisode "The Sign of Three".
In 2014, Enoch was cast in the series regular role of Wes Gibbins in the legal drama seriesHow to Get Away with Murderproduced by Shonda Rhimes. For his portrayal of Gibbins, Enoch has received 2015 and 2016 nominations for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
In 2016, Enoch was cast as Edgar/Poor Tom in the well received Talawa Theatre Company and Manchester Royal Exchange co-production ofKing Lear, for which he won much praise for his characterization and the physicality he brought to the roles.
He is an Aston Villa fan. In Brazil, he's a Flamengo fan.
