Rockstar Advanced Game Engine

Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, better known by its acronymRAGE, is a game engine created byRockstar San Diego's RAGE Technology Group division. The engine is shared betweenRockstar Games studios and used to power their video games onPC as well as theXbox 360,PlayStation 3,Xbox One,PlayStation 4,Xbox Series X|S andPlayStation 5 consoles.

The game engine was first tested on Rockstar San Diego's 2006 video game Rockstar Games PresentsTable Tennis.
Prior to RAGE, Rockstar mostly usedCriterion GamesRenderWare engine to develop various game titles, including thePlayStation 2,Xbox, andMicrosoft Windows installments of theGrand Theft Auto franchise.
RAGE was retooled and extended to add ambient occlusion, improved lighting and particle systems inGrand Theft Auto V, and DirectX 11 support, along with the aforementioned enhancements in the Microsoft Windows version ofMax Payne 3. RAGE would later be further refined with the release ofRed Dead Redemption 2 in2018, supporting DirectX 12, physically based rendering, volumetric clouds and fog values, pre-calculated global illumination as well as aVulkan renderer in the Windows version.[1]
