Washington Smothers Southern In Tuesday Win

November 25, 2025 | Women's Basketball

SEATTLE —Washington women's basketball (6-0, 0-0 Big Ten) smothered Southern (1-5, 0-0 America East) defensively in a 66-40 Tuesday evening win in Alaska Airlines Arena.

It's the second-fewest points the Huskies have allowed this season, and the fourth time they have held an opponent to 43 points or less. Southern's 25.9% shooting percentage was its lowest this season. The Lady Jaguars only knocked down one 3-pointer the entire night.

UW forced 18 opposing turnovers, recording nine blocks and nine steals.

Sophomore guard Avery Howell knocked down a 3-pointer with her first shot of the game and didn't look back, matching her career high of 18 points with three made shots from behind the arc. Howell finished with five rebounds and two steals.

The other Husky in double digits was freshman Brynn McGaughy, who recorded 14 points with three blocks. It was her second consecutive game with double-digit points.

Washington entered the break with a 35-20 lead, marking the third straight game it has held the opponent to no more than 20 entering halftime.

Ten different Huskies recorded at least a point on Tuesday, including freshman guard Nina Cain, who used a put-back to notch her first collegiate points.

Junior forward Olivia Anderson showed off her range late in the second half, recording Washington's seventh 3-pointer of the night and the first of her career.

Senior guard Hannah Stines and junior guard Chloe Briggs both dished out three assists each, while senior center Yulia Grabovskaia and freshman guard Sienna Harvey each pulled down seven rebounds.

The Huskies 6-0 start is its best since 2023, and has moved them into No. 22 of the AP Poll.

Up next, Washington continues its homestand with a meeting against UCSD on Friday, November 28 at 6:00 p.m.
