The Giant Octopus inhabited the Pacific Ocean and had been attacking and sinking fishery vessels and transportation ships two to three times per year.

The timing of its activities was possibly before the appearance of Godzilla, as it was said that since Godzilla took the Pacific Ocean as its territory, not only humans but also other monsters were scared off by Godzilla's presence. It was said to be regrettable that United Nation didn't send forces which African nations asked for and had exterminated Griffons at early stage and prevented the monsters from reproducing, or had prevent conflicts among humanity at least.

Trivia
  • Like itspredecessor, the orthography of Griffon is Gurihon (グリホン,   Gurihon?) while the actual labeling of Griffon in Japanese is Guriffon (グリフォン,   Guriffon?); this gap was made possibly due to the fact that labeling of foreign words had not been standardized completely in thetime when the filmLatitude Zero was made.
