Bikini (also known asPikinni) is an atoll in theRepublic of the Marshall Islands, an archipelago in Micronesia. Micronesia, one of the three sub-regions of Oceania (along with Polynesia and Melanesia) is located in the northwest Pacific, south of Japan and east of the Philippines. Bikini atoll is referenced in multiple films in theGodzilla franchise, and is physically seen in the comic bookGodzilla: Awakening and the2014 film,Godzilla.

Bikini Atoll consists of 23 islands surrounding a 229.4-square-mile (594.1 km2) lagoon. As part of thePacific Proving Grounds, it was the site of more than 20 nuclear weapons tests between 1946 and 1958.

History[]

Showa era[]

Godzilla[]

In the original film, Dr.Kyohei Yamane hypothesizes that anAmerican hydrogen bomb test conducted at Bikini Atoll awakened and removedGodzilla from his underwater environment and caused him to absorb massive amounts of radiation.

Heisei Series[]

Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah[]

In the Heisei Series, writer Kenichiro Terasawa hypothesizes that the Castle Bravo H-bomb conducted at Bikini Atoll in1954 mutated aGodzillasaurus living on nearbyLagos Island and turned it intoGodzilla. After learning of and testing this theory, theFuturians travel back in time to1944 and remove the Godzillasaurus from Lagos Island, taking it to the Bering Sea in hopes of erasing Godzilla from history.

However, it is later revealed that the Godzilla which attacked Japan in 1954 was a different Godzillasaurus from the one on Lago, and was still mutated by the H-bomb test in 1954. The Godzilla that attacked Japan in1984 and1989 was actually the result of the Futurians moving the Godzillasaurus from Lagos to the Bering Sea, where it was mutated by a Russian nuclear submarine crash.

MonsterVerse[]

Godzilla/Monarch: Legacy of Monsters[]

In 1954,United States military under the orders of GeneralPuckett readied a nuclear warhead at Bikini Atoll in an attempt to kill Godzilla after he was supposedly behind the destruction of several submarines. When Godzilla surfaced at Bikini, the bomb was detonated, with Puckett,Lee Shaw,Bill Randa,Keiko Miura and several military officers observing the detonation from a distance. Godzilla was believed by those in attendance to have been killed by the blast. In actuality, it failed to kill or even visibly harm Godzilla, who subsequently disappeared for 60 years. The bombing was covered up as a nuclear test.

Reiwa era[]

Godzilla Minus One[]

In 1947, the United States deployed hydrogen bombing tests in Bikini Atoll at the same timeGodzilla was within the vicinity. This caused the creature to undergo a rapid growth in size and gain powerful abilities such as regeneration and atomic breath, while also making it more aggerssive.

Comics[]

Godzilla: Awakening[]

Planning to eliminate bothGodzilla andShinomura, the United States military lured the monsters to Bikini Atoll with a nuclear warhead, then detonated it as they battled on land. The blast successfully killed Shinomura, but Godzilla survived and went into hibernation.
