Common Misconceptions

The exchange of unverified folk wisdom—often referred to asold wives’ tales—stubbornly persists, passed down from generation to generation. Here are four beliefs that prove such popular wisdom isn’t always wise.

Chewing gum in your stomach

While it’s true that your body is incapable of digesting your averagechewing gum, it will not remain in yourdigestive system longer than anything else you may consume. According to experts at theMayo Clinic, swallowed gum will pass through your digestive tract relatively intact and exit your system along with other waste.

Carrots and night vision

This myth was popularized by theRoyal Air Force duringWorld War II. After theAllied powers made secret advancements inradar technology, British pilots needed an explanation as to how they were able to shoot down German aircraft in low visibility. Claiming that their military successes wereall thanks to carrots helped hide their technological innovation while encouraging healthy eating at home. Unfortunately, carrots will only noticeably improve your vision if you are deficient invitamin A.

Feed a cold, starve a fever

As popular as this piece of colloquial medical advice may be, it is also false. Eating while you have afever will not harm you, and it may even help you feel better. It is also important to drink plenty of fluids whether you have acold or a fever, as these afflictions may causedehydration.

Shaving makes hair grow back thicker

Shavinghair does not affect itsthickness, color, or rate of growth. While freshly shaved hair may seem darker or thicker, that is just because the tapered end has been removed, leaving only the blunt end of the cut hair.
