O termofakaleiti (cun longoi no final) está formado polo prefixofaka- (na maneira de) e o empréstito anglosaxónlady (dama). Osfakaleiti prefiren autonominarse comoleiti ouladies. Os fakaleiti ou fakafefine aseméllanse aos samoanosfa'afafine e os hawaianosmahu.
