Volume control stopped working for DELL U4025QW#5106

So, this used to work.

It got wobbly during last updates with macOS, but has now completely disappeared. I can switch DELL as the speaker output, but cannot control the volume -- neither with keys nor from the control menu. The volume is simply grayed out.

I am running:

  • BetterDisplay 4.1.5, release 47757.
  • Apple M1 Max
  • macOS Tahoe 26.3

DCC is recognised BetterDisplay and Volume control control shows under "Available functions:

  • Volume control: Enabled
  • Mute: Disabled
  • Driver: DCC

I can't find anything on this topic either on Google or in this discussion thread. I've tried:

  • upgrading OS / BetterDisplay
  • restarting the computer
  • disabling and reenabling BetterDisplay under Settings / Accessibility
  • reinitializing the monitor in BetterDisplay

Nothing helped. Monitor is connected through Thunderbolt directly.

How are you trying to control the volume? From the app slider or Control Center? The latter will not work, the former should work with DDC. If control works via the app's volume slider, but not with keyboard, then it is probably a keyboard accessibility permission issue (you can fix this under System Settings).

Yes, I've tried from the Control Centre and with Volume buttons. Nothing works.

Control Centre slider is actually grayed out -- doesn't show a slider at all.

Right. But Control Center control for DDC never worked. You need to use the app volume sliders.

Huh, I know for a fact I could change the volume through Control Centre. Was it configured differently, then? Do I need to disable DCC?

I am not sure. You can change volume via CC for audio outputs that have native volume control (typically analog output, USB audio, airplay etc). HDMI and DP audio does not have volume control in macOS so CC volume control won't work. Maybe you had eqMac or some other app installed that attempts to fix that.
