Access the serif version of inter in Figma?#818

Hello.

Long-time Inter user, first time exploration into the world of serifs.

I am swapping the numeric characters for Inter to monospace (achieved) and want to also swap the 1 character to the alternative serif version in Figma.

Is there a special trick to achieve this? I believe the serif version to be theSS01 version of the font.

I thought maybe turning on Disambiguation the 1 character might get the serif, but it only does the capital i.

Does Figma support Character Variants?
The alternate 1 with the curved "serif" iscv01.
See here:https://rsms.me/inter/#features/cv

It does work with Tabular Figures (tnum) enabled.

If Figma does not support Character Variants the only way would be to "freeze" the feature into your own version of the font.

@kenmcd Thank you for getting back to me. I don't think Figma allows this level of customisation. It looks like I can only toggle one character between the original and CV01 versions (see attached).

How would you recommend "freezing" the feature into your own font version? And importantly, would this work when displaying the font on web-based applications on other users' machines, or would that revert to the original version of Inter?

Your image is a bit odd.
(no foot on the tabular one)
Looks like Inter v3.19, not the current v4.1 (4.001).
IIRC there was another issue involving Figma which determined they still had v3.19.
I do not use Figma so I do not know how the fonts work.
But your image looks liketnum andcv01 are both enabled on Inter v3.19.

For web purposes you would need to host the modified v4.1 fonts yourself.
You freeze the features.
Then compress the TTFs to WOFF2.
And host these WOFF2 files.

In the example I've shown (above), I've just turned on monospacing in Figma (bottom row) and then selected the alternative one (also bottom row). They don't give the option to select the team. We have managed to do this in the product we're designing, but not in Figma, which is a little frustrating.

I have removed Inter from my machine and reinstalled versionInter-4.1.

Here are the controls that you get in Figma, to toggle the font features.

Here is a shot of our product, where thetnum is displayed.

I guess we'll have to live with this, until Figma catches up and supportsInter-4.1
