Sorry,@AA-Turner and@Yhg1s, I could not cleanly backport this to3.13 due to a conflict.
Please backport usingcherry_picker on command line.

Backport almost certainly failing as the other 3.13 PRs aren't yet merged -- if it still fails after that I can do it manually.
