👍 on merging in general and +0.5 on merging this for the RC.

Seems safe, but not clear if this is actually a regression and we have been bit by over-zealous up-casting before.

I would be fine if this doesn't get into 1.5.0. I just figured it should go
into whatever is the current maintenance branch.
