Seems reasonable, but I'm not an nbagg expert.
I assume you've tested that this works? Our test suite doesn't seem to use it. |

Theoretically, this would be a bit faster perhaps, but I don't think I noticed. Maybe could get a What's new, but only if its effects are apparent?
