As pointed out above by@timhoffm, despite my claims,axes_grid is not actually deprecated. We could discuss whether we want to, or if we want to bring axes_grid into the main library.

Ithink a lot of axes grid is done my layout='compressed', but some things are different, and one could imagine wanting an object that is just a grid of axes. So bringing the functionality into the main library might be desirable.
