Labels are often cut off, because the main plot does not leave enough room in the margins. This should be handled automatically, and I cannot stress enough how basic this feature is to any plotting package. With matplotlib, I usually have to tweak the dpi and figure size a lot just to get the labels to be in the picture. The problem is particularly bad if one wants to use the savefig() command, since then expanding the frame through the GUI isn't an option.
