The gc module was already imported at module scope ingit/repo/base.py, sincef1a82e4 (gitpython-developers#555). Importing the top-levelgit module or any submodule of it runs that import statement.Because the gc module is already imported, reimporting it is fast.Imports that there is no specific reason to do locally should be atmodule scope. Having them local decreased readability, in partbecause of how black inserts a black line between them andgc.collect() calls they are imported to allow.An alternative to this change would be to remove the preexistingtop-level "import gc" (there is also another one in the test suite)and replace it with a local import as well. I am unsure if thatwould affect performance and, if so, whether the effect would begood or bad, since the small delay of the import might potentiallybe less desirable to an applicaion if it occurs while the work ofthe application is already in progress.If a gc.collect() call runs as a consequence of a finally block or__del__ method being called during interpreter shutdown, then in(very) rare cases the variable may have been set to None. But thisdoes not appear to have been the intent behind making the importslocal. More importantly, a local import should not be expected tosucceed, or the imported module usable, in such a situation.

Thanks a lot for the cleanup!
It looks like cygwin is now broken, which is a little strange as I would expect them to test on cygwin. Maybe that implies it's something to be fixed here?
In any case, it seems like no PR can be merged if this cygwin failure is now a common occurrence, but maybe they will fix it soon enough and sitting it out is the best way of handling this.

I have no objection to waiting. However, my guess is that the cause is sufficiently weird that a fix may take a while. I also somewhat doubt much testing is done on Cygwin. Since, as is expected to be the casefor |

Like the xfail was, this is conditional, being done only in thespecific situation the PermissionError occurs. Besides that it doesnot always run even on Windows (only in 3.12 and later), thisresembles various other conditional and non-conditional gc.collectcalls.It had previously appeared to me that two calls to gc.collect wererequired, but I am unable to reproduce that. It may have beenspecific to how I was running it on my system at that time. Theneed for only one call may have been brought about by changes tothe code in the mean time, but I have tested that only one callappears required even without the changes ingitpython-developers#1765.

Ifeither of those features are used on Windows, a malicious `git.exe` or`bash.exe` may be run from an untrusted repository.### DetailsAlthough GitPython often avoids executing programs found in an untrustedsearch path since 3.1.33, two situations remain where this still occurs.Either can allow arbitrary code execution under some circumstances.#### When a shell is usedGitPython can be told to run `git` commands through a shell rather thanas direct subprocesses, by passing `shell=True` to any method thataccepts it, or by both setting `Git.USE_SHELL = True` and not passing`shell=False`. Then the Windows `cmd.exe` shell process performs thepath search, and GitPython does not prevent that shell from finding andrunning `git` in the current directory.When GitPython runs `git` directly rather than through a shell, theGitPython process performs the path search, and currently omits thecurrent directory by setting `NoDefaultCurrentDirectoryInExePath` in itsown environment during the `Popen` call. Although the `cmd.exe` shellwill honor this environment variable when present, GitPython does notcurrently pass it into the shell subprocess's environment.Furthermore, because GitPython sets the subprocess CWD to the root of arepository's working tree, using a shell will run a malicious `git.exe`in an untrusted repository even if GitPython itself is run from atrusted location.This also applies if `Git.execute` is called directly with `shell=True`(or after `Git.USE_SHELL = True`) to run any command.#### When hook scripts are runOn Windows, GitPython uses `bash.exe` to run hooks that appear to bescripts. However, unlike when running `git`, no steps are taken to avoidfinding and running `bash.exe` in the current directory.This allows the author of an untrusted fork or branch to cause amalicious `bash.exe` to be run in some otherwise safe workflows. Anexample of such a scenario is if the user installs a trusted hook whileon a trusted branch, then switches to an untrusted feature branch(possibly from a fork) to review proposed changes. If the untrustedfeature branch contains a malicious `bash.exe` and the user's currentworking directory is the working tree, and the user performs an actionthat runs the hook, then although the hook itself is uncorrupted, itruns with the malicious `bash.exe`.Note that, while `bash.exe` is a shell, this is a separate scenario fromwhen `git` is run using the unrelated Windows `cmd.exe` shell.### PoCOn Windows, create a `git.exe` file in a repository. The
gcmodulewas already imported at module scope ingit/repo/base.py. Although it was moved recently, it is not a new addition. It has been present for about seven years, sincef1a82e4 (#555). Importing the top-level git module or any submodule of it runs that import statement:Because the
gcmodule is already imported, reimporting it is fast.Imports that there is no specific reason to do locally should be at module scope. Having them local decreased readability, in part because of how black inserts a black line between them and
gc.collect()calls they are imported to allow.An alternative to this change would be to remove the preexisting top-level
import gc(there is also another one in the test suite) and replace it with a local import as well. I am unsure if that would affect performance and, if so, whether the effect would be good or bad, since the small delay of the import might potentially be less desirable to an application if it occurs while the work of the application is already in progress.If a
gc.collect()call runs as a consequence of a finally block or__del__method being called during interpreter shutdown, then in (very) rare cases the variable may have been set to None. But this does not appear to have been the intent behind making the imports local. More importantly, a local import should not be expected to succeed, or the imported module usable, in such a situation.Conceptually unrelated to this, it looks like the newly released version of
blackfails to install on Cygwin in thetest-cygwin.ymlworkflow. I expect failures from that workflow for this reason. Although unrelated, there is of course no rush on this PR, and if that does happen, it would prevent any Cygwin tests from running until a fix or workaround is applied. If that is fixed first, this PR could be rebased. If this problem doesn't happen, then it is resolved or somehow specific to the setup in my fork and on my local machine, in which case probably nothing has to be done about it.
