This replaces 2-argumentsuper(...) calls with the zero-argumentsuper() form everywhere applicable:

  • All uses of two-argumentsuper in thecode are replaced.
  • All but one mention of two-argumentsuper incomments are replaced.

I had omitted this from#1725 because it may require more technical attention to fully check than other code changes there, and that PR was mostly for comments and docstrings.

Exactly whensuper() can be used

Sincesuper is in practice one of the most confusing features of Python, I've included this section to help in verifying the changes here, and also so that they could be reverified later. However, this section is optional.

As noted in output ofhelp(super) (which is fromthis code, thoughthe other documentation can be useful):

super() -> same as super(__class__, <first argument>)

__class__ isactually literal there--though the static__class__ cell should not be confused with the dynamic__class__ attribute--but it can also be thought of as standing for the name of the enclosing class (or narrowest enclosing class in the case of nested classes), which is actually what one typically writes in the two-argument form ofsuper.

When the expression passed in place of__class__ refers to the (narrowest enclosing) class, and the expression passed in place of<first argument> is the name of the first parameter of the method (typicallyself in instance methods, orcls in class methods or__new__), the zero-argument formsuper() can be used instead with the same meaning.

The one place I couldn't replace it

The above-described situation appliedeverywhere in GitPython wheresuper was actuallyused.

However, there are also comments in some places describing how something else could be done or how what was done could be done differently. In those,most showings of multiple-argumentsuper were replaceable withsuper without changing what the code would mean and do if used in the place the comment pertained to. But then there is this, ingit.objects.util.TraversableIterableObj:

The actualsuper call in the code there is replaceable, and I replaced it, with zero-argumentsuper(). But the comment--or, more precisely, the string being used as a comment--shows a call withCommit as the class name. I'm not sure if that's intended or not. If it is intended, maybe it represents code that would be written somewhere else. So I haven't changed that, though I'm willing to do so if the matter is clarified. It could be changed either in a new commit in this PR, or in a subsequent PR.

Other changes

There's some proofreading of the kind done in#1725 that I missed there and took care of here.

More significantly,TestBigRepoR.setUp contains:

In addition to replacing those two-argumentsuper calls with zero-argumentsuper(), I also removed the logic to catch and swallowAttributeError. As covered in more detail in the9113177 commit message, this is unnecessary becauseunittest.TestCase defines an emptysetUp method to allow this kind of special casing to be avoided, and it may be brittle becauseAttributeError could be raised from the actual code of asetUp method, due to the specific way the code to swallow it is written. However, if that latter effect, which would usually be strongly unwanted, is actually the goal, then this should be undone and a suitable comment and/or clarifying refactoring done.

What isn't included

It's unclear whethersuper calls in test classes'setUp andtearDown methods are always made in the places they are made because that is where superclass and sibling-class fixture acquisition and release behavior should occur. For example, usually, ifsetUp delegates viasuper to another class'ssetUp method at the beginning, and in a case where the correspondingtearDown method needs delegate viasuper to another class'stearDown method, then thattearDown call should be at theend, so that resource acquisition and release more often occurs in a temporally nested way that is easier to reason about and more often correct.

However, sometimes doing it differently is deliberate. Furthermore,setUp andtearDown methods are inherently weird, because, if a subclass'ssetUp calls a superclass'ssetUp and then fails with an exception, thentearDown won't run. (Also, in situations wheretearDown does run, an exception in onetearDown method may still prevent other MRO classes'tearDown methods from running. Unlike the first issue, for this there isn't really any perfect thing to do. But I think the framework still makes it somewhat harder than necessary to reason about when thetearDown calls are manually written rather than arranged and implied by thesetUp logic.)

For this reason, I am unsure if it is really worthwhile to try to improve ordering. If improvements are to be made, it might be best to have onlysetUp methods and have them register cleanup logic by callingaddCleanup--or, perhaps better where applicable,enterContext, though a backport of it for Python <3.11 would be needed. UnliketearDown methods, cleanup scheduled withaddCleanup, either directly or throughenterContext, is deterministically performed, in the opposite of the order it was added, even ifsetUp failed with an exception after theaddCleanup call.

These are a few things I had missed ingitpython-developers#1725.
This replaces 2-argument super(...) calls with zero-argumentsuper() calls, where doing so preserves the exact semantics. Thisturns out to be everywhere in the actual code (now all uses of thesuper builtin are calls to it with zero arguments), and also inmost places code was discussed in comments.The single exception, occurring in comments (technically a stringliteral, but being used as a comment), appears ingit.objects.util.TraversableIterableObj, where super(Commit, self),rather than super(TraversableIterableObj, self) which would havethe same meaning as super(), is shown. It may be that this shouldbe changed, but such a revision would not signify identicalsemantics, and may require other changes to preserve or recoverclarity or documentary accuracy.
This is conceptually independent of the immediately precedingsuper() call refactoring, but serves the same goal of simplifyingand clarifying super() calls.In test.performance.lib, the TestBigRepoR and TestBigRepoRWclasses' setUp methods had calls to setUp through super proxies,which were wrapped in try-blocks to swallow AttributeErrorexceptions. This removes that, relying on the presence of setUpmethods in some parent or sibling class in the MRO.The intent appeared to be solely to account for the possibilitythat no class in the MRO would define a setUp method. However,the unittest.TestCase base class defines noop setUp and tearDownmethods to ensure this does not have to be done.This may also make the code more robust, because the form in whichAttributeError was being swallowed was:    try:        super().setUp()    except AttributeError:        passBut that has the disadvantage of also catching AttributeError dueto a bug or other problem in code that runs *in* an ancestor orsibling class's existing setUp method. This could alternativelybe addressed by using:    try:        other_setUp = super().setUp    except AttributeError:        pass    else:        other_setUp()However, because unittest.TestCase provides empty setUp andtearDown methods to allow such special-casing to be avoided (bothin cases like this and for the test runner), this isn't needed.

I definitely don't remember what the intention originally was, but I can absolutely believe that GitPython tried to be very clever with inheritance. Thus I suggest to find a test for this case or see if adding one yields desirable results. From there it should be clear what can be done (which might as well involve changing the doc-string).

You're welcome!but I feel this praise is somewhat undeserved. As noted in#1725 (comment), the way I've taken in the code is closer to snorkeling along the surface than a deep dive. Over time, however, I expect my knowledge and understanding of the code to deepen further.

For the change here in this PR, broad familiarity with the codebase was less relevant than in#1725, because the code that needed to be checked to verify correctness was always fairly nearby: I just needed to check, in each occurrence ofsuper passing two arguments, that it occurred in a method, that the first argument was the name of the (nearest enclosing) class, and that the second argument was the method's first parameter.

To me this reads like the waysuper(…) is used here can stay until there is an incentive to useaddCleanup(), which seems like a superior way of doing this along with the guarantee that the tear-down will happen as well.

Another option, which would sort of make this irrelevant, would be to convert all the tests to be purepytest tests. Most tests in the project useunittest, being implemented as methods of classes that inherit (indirectly) fromunittest.TestCase. A small number are purepytest tests, but not most, and currently none usepytest fixtures.pytest fixtures take care of cleanup as well asunittest.TestCase.addCleanup. Apytest fixture that requires cleanup can ensure it is performed by either(a) depending on another fixture that provides it, or(b) being implemented as a generator that does cleanup after theyield (sort of like how one writes a@contextlib.contextmanager-decorated function, except without writing thetry-finally oneself).

I already plan to make some of the tests intest_util.py purepytest tests, so that the xfail markings will be granular, eliminating all XPASSes and making immediately clear from the test code itself exactly which parameter sets produce failure on which tests. (This is what I meant in#1725 under "What is omitted".) I would definitelynot try to shoehorn a big design change affecting the entire test suite into that change. Nor do I have a drive to break things that are already working well. However, perhaps over time complete conversion of the test suite to purepytest tests, with thefurtherpytest features that this facilitates, would become natural.

Yes, that sounds like the way to go. Keep working what's working already, and if opportunities arise to improve it, probably by usingpytest instead, that can be done.
Since you are working with the code the most these days, it's really about what seems most useful to you.

OnWindows, GitPython uses an untrusted search path if it uses a shell torun `git`, as well as when it runs `bash.exe` to interpret hooks. Ifeither of those features are used on Windows, a malicious `git.exe` or`bash.exe` may be run from an untrusted repository.### DetailsAlthough GitPython often avoids executing programs found in an untrustedsearch path since 3.1.33, two situations remain where this still occurs.Either can allow arbitrary code execution under some circumstances.#### When a shell is usedGitPython can be told to run `git` commands through a shell rather thanas direct subprocesses, by passing `shell=True` to any method thataccepts it, or by both setting `Git.USE_SHELL = True` and not passing`shell=False`. Then the Windows `cmd.exe` shell process performs thepath search, and GitPython does not prevent that shell from finding andrunning `git` in the current directory.When GitPython runs `git` directly rather than through a shell, theGitPython process performs the path search, and currently omits thecurrent directory by setting `NoDefaultCurrentDirectoryInExePath` in itsown environment during the `Popen` call. Although the `cmd.exe` shellwill honor this environment variable when present, GitPython does notcurrently pass it into the shell subprocess's environment.Furthermore, because GitPython sets the subprocess CWD to the root of arepository's working tree, using a shell will run a malicious `git.exe`in an untrusted repository even if GitPython itself is run from atrusted location.This also applies if `Git.execute` is called directly with `shell=True`(or after `Git.USE_SHELL = True`) to run any command.#### When hook scripts are runOn Windows, GitPython uses `bash.exe` to run hooks that appear to bescripts. However, unlike when running `git`, no steps are taken to avoidfinding and running `bash.exe` in the current directory.This allows the author of an untrusted fork or branch to cause amalicious `bash.exe` to be run in some otherwise safe workflows. Anexample of such a scenario is if the user installs a trusted hook whileon a trusted branch, then switches to an untrusted feature branch(possibly from a fork) to review proposed changes. If the untrustedfeature branch contains a malicious `bash.exe` and the user's currentworking directory is the working tree, and the user performs an actionthat runs the hook, then although the hook itself is uncorrupted, itruns with the malicious `bash.exe`.Note that, while `bash.exe` is a shell, this is a separate scenario fromwhen `git` is run using the unrelated Windows `cmd.exe` shell.### PoCOn Windows, create a `git.exe` file in a repository. Then create a`Repo` object, and call any method through it (directly or indirectly)that supports the `shell` keyword argument with `shell=True`:```powershellmkdir testrepogit init testrepocp ... testrepo git.exe # Replace "..." with any executable of choice.python -c "import git; print(git.Repo('testrepo').git.version(shell=True))"```The `git.exe` executable in the repository directory will be run.Or use no `Repo` object, but do it from the location with the `git.exe`:```powershellcd testrepopython -c "import git; print(git.Git().version(shell=True))"```The `git.exe` executable in the current directory will be run.For the scenario with hooks, install a hook in a repository, create a`bash.exe` file in the current directory, and perform an operation thatcauses GitPython to attempt to run the hook:```powershellmkdir testrepocd testrepogit initmv .git/hooks/pre-commit.sample .git/hooks/pre-commitcp ... bash.exe # Replace "..." with any executable of choice.echo "Some text" >file.txtgit add file.txtpython -c "import git; git.Repo().index.commit('Some message')"```The `bash.exe` executable in the current directory will be run.### ImpactThe greatest impact is probably in applications that set `Git.USE_SHELL= True` for historical reasons. (Undesired console windows had, in thepast, been created in some kinds of applications, when it was not used.)Such an application may be vulnerable to arbitrary code execution from amalicious repository, even with no other exacerbating conditions. Thisis to say that, if a shell is used to run `git`, the full effect ofCVE-2023-40590 is still present. Furthermore, as noted above, runningthe application itself from a trusted directory is not a sufficientmitigation.An application that does not direct GitPython to use a shell to run`git` subprocesses thus avoids most of the risk. However, there is nosuch straightforward way to prevent GitPython from running `bash.exe` tointerpret hooks. So while the conditions needed for that to be exploitedare more involved, it may be harder to mitigate decisively prior topatching.### Possible solutionsA straightforward approach would be to address each bug directly:- When a shell is used, pass `NoDefaultCurrentDirectoryInExePath` intothe subprocess environment, because in that scenario the subprocess isthe `cmd.exe` shell that itself performs the path search.- Set `NoDefaultCurrentDirectoryInExePath` in the GitPython processenvironment during the `Popen` call made to run hooks with a `bash.exe`subprocess.These need only be done on
