I have an healthy workspace and VS Code installed on my machine.
When I try to access the Workspace using the VS Code Desktop button, it opens a new window in VS Code and then starts downloading a binary:

Downloading v2.20.0+03b5012 from https://coder.mydomain.com to/Users/myuser/Library/Application Support/Code/User/globalStorage/coder.coder-remote/coder.mydomain.com/bin/coder-darwin-arm64

It downloads up to ~20MB and then it shows a pop-up with error

Failed to open workspaceUnable to download binary: aborted

This is a screenshot of the error message:

HI@santurini, we are unable to reproduce this issue on version 2.20. Could it be a network or configuration issue on your end?

To understand and be able to reproduce the behavior, we need to know how Coder is installed and deployed. Where are workspaces provisioned?

@matifali I am running Coder in a Kubernetes cluster, and I was thinking just the same as you. In fact also the connection to the Workspace can take an arbitrary amount of time depending on how many tries it needs to do to install the coder-server binary.

Is there a way to manually download the binary for the VS Code Desktop?

You can get it fromYOUR_CODER_ACCESS_URL/bin for your system and then set the binary path. You can also uncheck "Enable Downloads" to prevent VSCode from downloading the binary on each start.

Regarding the networking issue, I would advise debugging it to find out what is causing the connection to hang. It could be some settings on your load balancer.

We have some troubles with the datacenter hosting the machines, thank you very much! I will try this solution in a minute
