This PR adds nothing to the core codebase, but it adds a check for the size of the PROGMEM segment in the compilation process. In case more than 64kB are used, a warning is displayed, suggesting the use of the
PROGMEM_FARmacro fromprogmem_far.hand thepgm_read_xxx_farmacros frompgmspace.h.If the PROGMEM code grows beyond 64kB (on an Arduino Mega), PROGMEM strings, lookup tables (e.g., for digitalWrite), and user data may not be accessible anymore with the ordinary PROGMEM macros, leading to strange behavior (#174), and there is no easy fix for that. Instead of silently failing, it is better to flag this with a warning, I believe.
The cure is to use the PROGMEM_FAR macro (which is part of the avr-libc 2.2.0). Since this is not available, I have published the progmem_far library, which provides this missing macro. It pushes the PROGMEM data to the far end of the flash memory, and one needs to use the _far type macros to access the data. In the library, there are two example sketches,
progmem_failandprogmem_repaired, that demonstrate the printing of the warning and faulty behavior, and the repair by using PROGMEM_FAR.I believe that this is a minimally intrusive solution to this nasty issue.
