jsonwebtoken's insecure implementation of key retrieval function could lead to Forgeable Public/Private Tokens from RSA to HMAC

Moderate severity GitHub Reviewed PublishedDec 21, 2022 in auth0/node-jsonwebtoken • UpdatedJun 24, 2024

Package

npmjsonwebtoken (npm)

Affected versions

<= 8.5.1

Patched versions

9.0.0

Description

Overview

Versions<=8.5.1 ofjsonwebtoken library can be misconfigured so that passing a poorly implemented key retrieval function (referring to thesecretOrPublicKey argument from thereadme link) will result in incorrect verification of tokens. There is a possibility of using a different algorithm and key combination in verification than the one that was used to sign the tokens. Specifically, tokens signed with an asymmetric public key could be verified with a symmetric HS256 algorithm. This can lead to successful validation of forged tokens.

Am I affected?

You will be affected if your application is supporting usage of both symmetric key and asymmetric key in jwt.verify() implementation with the same key retrieval function.

How do I fix it?

Update to version 9.0.0.

Will the fix impact my users?

There is no impact for end users

CVSS v3 base metrics

Attack vector:More severe the more the remote (logically and physically) an attacker can be in order to exploit the vulnerability.
Attack complexity:More severe for the least complex attacks.
Privileges required:More severe if no privileges are required.
User interaction:More severe when no user interaction is required.
Scope:More severe when a scope change occurs, e.g. one vulnerable component impacts resources in components beyond its security scope.
Confidentiality:More severe when loss of data confidentiality is highest, measuring the level of data access available to an unauthorized user.
Integrity:More severe when loss of data integrity is the highest, measuring the consequence of data modification possible by an unauthorized user.
Availability:More severe when the loss of impacted component availability is highest.
