Sinthe is a concoction made of diluted water from thePrimordial Sea. It induces short-term feelings of euphoria and pleasant hallucinations, but in the long term, causes side effects such as losing the ability to focus or control one's emotions. If stopped, withdrawal symptoms can include fatigue, anxiety, and paranoia. Sinthe is highly addictive — many families were destroyed by the abuse of this substance.[1]
Overview[]
Vacher created "Sinthe" after he discovered that diluting Primordial Seawater with normal water could produce a drink that causes feelings of euphoria. He manufactured and marketed it to fund his experiments, earning a lot of money through doing so. By the time of his arrest, he had even developed fruit-flavored Sinthe.[2]
During the time when Vacher was active,Poisson was administered byCallas, head of theSpina di Rosula. Seeing the devastating effects of Sinthe abuse, he banned it from the town and began investigating the drug vendors, eventually discovering the location of theSinthe production base. To protect his operation, Vacher framed Callas for murder, leading to latter's death in a duel against theChampion DuelistClorinde.[1]
Vacher's plot was uncovered through his connection to the "serial disappearances case." Following his arrest, his Sinthe production line was stopped, and the Fontaine authorities began working to confiscate any Sinthe still on the market. The final batch was seized around the time of the firstFontinalia Film Festival.[3]
After Sinthe was taken off the market, thePalais Mermonia introduced measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring. However, addiction continued to drive demand for the drug, leading to the rise of 'Imitation Sinthe,' a substance that could mimic its effects. InChecks & Cats, theTraveler helped theSpecial Security and Surveillance Patrol expose a large-scale Imitation Sinthe smuggling ring that had avoided the new legal measures by quickly moving their sales overseas. The Maison Gardiennage arrested the ringleader,Elodie, and are working on cleaning up the rest of the operation.
The ingredients for Imitation Sinthe are stated to have "many other regular uses," making them fairly inconspicuous.[4] Traces of Imitation Sinthe are very difficult for ordinary people to detect, but pose no problem forGuard Poodles.[5]
Trivia[]
- Sinthe is based onabsinthe, an alcoholic beverage that was banned for a long time because it was said to have addictive and psychoactive effects. It was proven that those effects, said to be caused by the ingredient wormwood, were not significant compared to the alcohol in absinthe.
- The Chinese term for Sinthe,乐斯Lèsī, is possibly derived from the semantic meaning of the character乐lè, "joy, pleasure," referring to the euphoriant effects of the drink, and the Chinese transliteration of absinthe,艾碧斯Àibìsī. Absinthe is also more commonly known as苦艾酒kǔ'ài-jiǔ, "wormwood wine" in Chinese, with艾ài as a contraction of the full transliteration of the name derived from its core active ingredient.
