Shields are quite useful when you're using a one handed weapon, being able to block heavy enemy attacks and save your HP bar. But can it block AOE attacks? Specifically, there are 4 attacks that I'm curious about.
- Explosions from guardian lasers, bomb arrows, and explosive barrels
- Elemental arrow AOE (minimal, but it still exists)
- Splash damage from shock arrows when there's rain (since that radius is quite big)
- Bomb rune explosions (not exactly an attack, but it can damage you if you use it in tight corners
Can a shield block AOE damage from each of these?

If there's an explosion of any kind in front of you, the shield will block it (there's also some combat tech for this, where you use the explosion to backflip, get extra height, and get in some arrows).
I don't remember for sure what happens with elemental arrows, but I'm pretty sure that you're saved from the AoE of fire and ice arrows only. Shock arrows will still electrify you if you're holding a metal shield, and you'll also be hit by the shock AoE if you're in the rain or other body of water.
It can absolutely block guardian lasers, bomb arrows, and explosive barrels as they are a directional attack. Elemental arrows (electric, ice, fire) can definitely be blocked, though the AOE effect of electric arrows hitting water or being in the rain will shock you, as it is all around you instead of directionally on your shield, like the main bow shot. Shock arrows will however shock you through ametal shield unless you have full rubber armor equipped (doesn't need to be upgraded) or any combination of shock resistance III. (2 from elixir and 1 from armor, etc.) Bomb rune explosions can be blocked and can be parried as well. I used to do this with lynels to get the parry timing, as when you parry the explosion, the parry animation continues for several frames and will parry the lynel's attack in a slightly larger window.

- @Blue-Blimp Paraglide north of the Ridgeland tower to a plateau looking area. It will start a shrine quest. The challenge is to put the 4 balls spread around the plateau and it's surroundings into their color corresponding hole. You can locate these balls using stasis. Once in the shrine, pull out a bomb and blow up the blocks directly in front of you. You will have to use an additional bomb to break more blocks directly beneath that, granting you access to a chest containing the main armor piece, the chest/torso piece. - @Blue-Blimp The helm is at a stable directly southeast of the Lake tower. Behind the stable you will find a Shrine; Ka'o Makagh. Use for a travel point and to ensure you are at the right stable. There will be an NPC at the horse enclosure most of the day, and you can talk to her to receive the quest. Then, proceed to the top of the stable and retrieve a metal axe. Talk to the NPC and she will thank you with the helm. Head directly east from the Faron tower and you will see a shrine covered in stone. There is always lightning. Speak to kass, then stand on the shrine and get struck by lightningFakeNews– FakeNews2025-12-16 18:04:12 +00:00Commented16 hours ago
