In the books[]

In theA Song of Ice and Fire novels, the Velaryon fleet is traditionally part of the largerroyal fleet. Hundreds of years prior to theWar of the Five Kings, it made up most of the royal fleet and was considered the most powerful naval force in theSeven Kingdoms.

It was the Velaryon fleet that carried the forces ofAegon the Conqueror to the mouth of theBlackwater Rush when he startedhis conquest. Lord Daemon Velaryon was thereafter namedmaster of ships and led his fleet against the combined forces of theKingdom of Mountain and Vale andBraavos. The Velaryon fleet was defeated in a battle in the waters offGulltown, and Lord Velaryon was killed.

The Velaryon fleet was used in two campaigns against theLysene pirate king Sargoso Saan in 29 and 30 AC, ferryingTargaryen military forces to theStepstones.

Rogar Baratheon, to no avail, petitionedDaemon Velaryon (the grandson of the aforementioned Daemon) to blockadeDragonstone with the Velaryon fleet to prevent variouslords from visiting the youngKing Jaehaerys and currying favor with him.

In 54 AC, Lord Daemon proposed to send the Velaryon fleet toOldtown to strongarm theMost Devout into electing a royalistHigh Septon.

During the War of the Five Kings, the Velaryon fleet is part ofStannis Baratheon's naval forces. It takes heavy losses during theBattle of the Blackwater, including Monford Velaryon and his flagshipPride of Driftmark.
