Research paper thumbnail of Area Studies and Sociology in Germany: From Subordination to Collaboration - In "Contextualizing the Contextualizers: How the Area Studies Controversy is Different in Different Places"
International Studies Review, 2024

While AS is usually presented as the “contextualizer” of the disciplines, this forum reverses the perspective by suggesting that an awareness of both diversity and context is also relevant when it comes to understanding the evolution of the field of AS and its relations to IR. In this forum, a selection of scholars with diverse backgrounds (US, Middle East, Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Central Asia), different (inter)disciplinary trainings and regional orientations examines how various fields of AS and its relations to the disciplines vary, and what follows from a stronger attention to such kind of diversity. By contextualizing the contextualizers, the forum brings attention to how a context-sensitive field can also suffer from its own provincialism. While the US-centric narrative about AS might have been almost “hegemonic,” at closer inspection, it turns out that AS in different (sub)disciplinary and geographical settings have evolved differently, and in some places the so-called Area Studies controversy (ASC) has been almost absent. A broadening of the perspective also reveals how the challenges to a successful cross-fertilization are not limited to those outlined in the “classic” ASC, but the forum does simultaneously offer encouraging lessons on how dialogues between area specialists and discipline-oriented scholars can help to overcome epistemological, theoretical, or methodological blind spots. Rather than presenting the IR/AS nexus as a panacea per se, the aim of the forum is therefore to invite to a broader and more self-reflective discussion on some of the opportunities as well as challenges associated with this strategy for making the study of international relations more context-sensitive and attentive to different forms of diversity.

Compared to previous experiences of antiracist struggles in Brazil, the Coalition stands out for its decentralized organization, its ability to convey political content through adequate aesthetic forms, its capillarity in the domestic sphere, and its transnational articulations. Equally striking is its intersectional character understood as both the emphasis on the transversal character of racism and the stress of the interdependent character of social struggles against different forms of inequalities (with regard to gender, race, class, etc.). The Coalition has so far proven to be particularly successful in terms of its mobilization capacity, its public visibility, and its agenda-setting power. According to our preliminary findings, its success can be explained, to a great extent, by its ability to vocalize a broad set of political claims and, consequently, to fill the gap left by other civil society actors demobilized by the far right-wing backlash in Brazil and the pandemic. Since January 2023, in the context of a new progressive government, the Coalition has started facing difficulties in preserving its intersectional and socially encompassing character.

To overcome this deficiency, the essay develops an analytical framework, according to which inequalities defined along four complementary and interdependent axes (material, power, environmental and epistemological asymmetries) are always signified, reproduced, and negotiated within convivial interactions.

Keywords: conviviality; inequality; critique to sociocentrism; critique to anthropocentrism.

Caderno CRH, 2019

How do inequalities and differences correlate? The argument is first developed through a critical discussion of three influential approaches in contemporary academic and political debates: the recognition-redistribution paradigm, as developed by N. Fraser and A. Honneth, the categorical inequalities approach of C. Tilly and the horizontal-vertical inequalities approach of F. Stewart. In spite of their divergences, these three approaches present a common conceptual limitation, which is to treat dynamic differences as binary and fixed categories: black-whites, men-women, mestizos-indigenous, etc. To overcome this deficit, I develop in the present article, starting from the concept of articulation, an analytical matrix according to which differences represent positionalities or sites of enunciation within hierarchical social relations. The nexus between differences and inequalities is illustrated by the recent articulation of the quilombolas in Brazil.

Key words: Difference. Inequality. Articulation. Positionality. Quilombolas.

The present paper draws on works that combine Marxist and Weberian traditions of social structure... moreThe present paper draws on works that combine Marxist and Weberian traditions of social structure analysis to interpret the contemporary Brazilian political crisis as a distributive conflict involving four classes or strata (precariat, outsiders, established, millionaires), defined using five determinant vectors of social inequality: wealth, position, knowledge, selective association and existential rights. The four classes or strata considered saw their wealth, their existential rights, and their knowledge grow in the period between 2003 and 2013. However, in this period, the precariat and the outsiders ascended significantly in their social position, while the established lost social position to the extent that their power to exclude outsiders from social spaces formerly reserved for their own usage diminished. The same logic applies to selective associations with regard to gender and race, since during the Workers’ Party (PT) administrations there was a decrease in the power of men and whites to discriminate against women and blacks. This loss of position in the hierarchies of class, gender and race fed the resentment of the established against the PT government even in times when, in terms of wealth, they experienced an ascendant trajectory. Starting in 2014, the picture changed. The exacerbation of the economic crisis caused all of the strata, especially the outsiders, to lose wealth. The established, though less threatened by the outsiders (the most affected by the crisis), also experienced social decline as the recession advanced. Finally, the millionaires who had until then been gaining at all of the levels of inequality with the PT governments, lost at least part of their selective associations as the investigations into corruption advanced. It is precisely when the millionaires began to lose that effective changes in favor of the removal of the president began to occur.

Recently, too, legal scholars have developed concepts to justify normatively the expansion of human rights (e.g. Habermas, Walker, Koskenniemi). This article reviews recent legal literature on global constitutionalization of human rights to reveal its blind spots, at two levels: i) the reaffirmation of European precedency for establishing the sources of human rights and ii) a lack of sociological tools for describing interpenetrations between law, power and social inequalities. In order to empirically illustrate these objections, the article analyses the recent global expansion of human rights of minorities, using two examples: cases treated by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Brazilian legalization of ancestral territories of afro-descendants. Finally, the article argues for a decentered perspective that (at the local level) connects human rights with concrete claims for justice.

During the two administrations of former President Lula da Silva (2003-2006 and 2007-2010) and the first administration of President Dilma Rousseff (2010-2014), economic
growth, improvements in labor market, progress in deprived regions and pro-poor policies interacted positively as drivers of inequality reduction. But due to the recent economic stagnation and political instability, Rousseff, in her new administration (2015-2018), is facing serious difficulties in sustaining the social gains obtained during the last twelve years. It seems that continuing the progress in inequality reduction in times of low economic growth requires deeper structural changes such as a progressive tax reform in order to effectively redistribute resources from the rich to the underprivileged classes. This paper discusses recent developments in Brazil from the perspective of entangled inequalities, a concept applied here with the objective of enlarging the narrow definition of inequality brought forward by hegemonic scholarship. After a brief
introduction into the conceptual framework of entangled inequalities, the paper presents, in its second section, an overview of recent changes in Brazilian social structure. The third section discusses the role of the Brazilian state in reducing inequalities. Finally, recent developments in Brazil with regard to the entangled inequalities framework are
assessed.

ABSTRACT
The following working paper lays out the baseline from which the research approach of the research network desiguALdades.net was developed. Starting from diverse social inequality phenomena in Latin America, the network seeks to underline the multidimensionality of inequalities and their transregional interdependencies, taking a synchronic as well as a diachronic perspective into account. It thereby draws, first, on the discourse on global approaches to the study of inequalities, particularly world system approaches and transnationalism. Secondly, it is based on a critical examination of key concepts (like figuration and regime). Lastly, it seeks to link these to subjects and areas, especially the environmental dimension, that until now have received little consideration in research on inequalities.

The paper discusses to a greater extent the cases of communities of Afro-descendants who live in areas disputed by agribusiness companies interested in expanding palm plantations mostly for biodiesel production. We found out that the introduction of new rights has first unleashed a local process of ethnic re-identification. In a certain way, minority rights themselves have created those minorities they are supposed to protect. Nevertheless, new minority rights have also reframed the conditions under which struggles for land are conducted and negotiated in Colombia as well as in Brazil. Seen as relays in an electrical circuit, minority rights serve to modulate power at the local level: in some cases, new rights amplify minorities’ power; in other situations, they can help contain the problems of abuses of power.

Accordingly, it identifies the structural forces of social inequalities on a world scale as they shape asymmetries observed in a wide array of phenomena, such as racial and gender inequality, urbanization, migration, commodity production, indigenous mobilization, ecological conflicts, and the "new middle class". A rich contribution to the study of the interconnections between the global social structure and multiple local and national hierarchies, Global Entangled Inequalities brings consistently together a variety of conceptual approaches, ranging from ethnographies to legal genealogies, and will therefore appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in social theory, power analysis, intersectionality studies, urban studies, and global social and environmental justice.

Divided into sections organized around themes like modernity, border epistemology, migration and 'the South', this book considers the self-definition and basic concepts of social sciences through an assessment of the new theoretical developments, such as postcolonial theory and subaltern studies, and whether they can be described as the decolonization of the discipline. With contributions from a truly international team of leading social scientists, this volume constitutes a unique and tightly focused exploration of the challenges presented by the decolonization of the discipline of sociology.

However, public and also scientific debates take place in narrow thematic boundaries. But in a world society that has been promoted by globalisation processes, the base of the traditional paradigm of development policy was shattered, prolonging the idea of the welfare state with respect to redistribution in the European post-war era along the north-south axis. The successes and failures of global economy have introduced new players to the game and limited the manoeuvering room of the former team captains in terms of an emphatic distribution policy. At the same time, new social inequalities arise in rich and in poor economies, which are not restricted to the material dimension alone. It is no longer solely about poverty and wealth or development and underdevelopment, but also about crossing ethnical, cultural and social barriers of participation. At the same time this constellation is a challenge for the disciplines of social sciences. The often requested interdisciplinarity, however, does not come about because there is a need, but rather requires occasions. This volume compiles the contributions of authors rooted in (social-) philosophy, sociology, political science and economics

There are forms of inequality that the Gini coefficient cannot show. These are the forms that explain the different experiences of poverty someone goes through depending on whether they are a woman or a man, a native or a migrant, of indigenous origin, living in an area contaminated by nearby industries, born in a high-income country or a less resourced one, practicing a minority religion, or living in a country with a history of ethnic segregation. For several decades, an academic perspective has been emerging that invites us to revitalize and complicate the analysis of inequalities, to think of them in plural, intertwined, and operating on a global scale, beyond the mere distribution of income, education levels, and labor market positions. This book is an updated compendium of this renewed analytical perspective. The works presented here delve into the reverse side of the fabric of inequalities, describing the concrete ways in which millions of people on the continent are deprived of well-being and rights and documenting the resistance strategies many of them deploy. They show how, despite the progress made by compensatory policies in several countries of the region at the beginning of the 21st century, social distances in terms of opportunities, valued skills, and power persist and even widen in our communities to this day. This book also highlights a trend often overlooked by perspectives restricted to national borders and statistics: the policies some countries implement against inequalities are immersed in the global dynamics of the capitalist economy, which inevitably tends to create inequality.

As such, it sheds new light on the use of explicit non-economic violence on the part of capitalist expansion, in the form of colonial or imperial policies, plundering or legal forms of expropriation. As such, it will appeal to sociologists, historians, economists, legal scholars and political theorists with interests in capitalism and inequalities.

In such books as Talking Visions , Unthinking Eurocentrism: Multiculturalism and the Media (with Robert Stam, 1994), and Race in Translation: Culture Wars Around the Postcolonial Atlantic (with Robert Stam, 2012), she unsettles and reinterprets the boundaries between "the West and the Rest," as well as between the global South and global North. We spoke with Ella Shohat in a Berlin restaurant about the politicization of culture and the culturalization of politics. Here she tackles such varied subjects as the intimate connections between Jewish and Muslim histories and culture and the debates over circumcision, Islamophobia, and anti-Semitism, always in a sensitive and empathetic manner, while still retaining analytical distance and a sharp theoretical vision.

Oxford University Press, 2017
encompassing discussion of the tensions and potentials observed in the relationship between socia... moreencompassing discussion of the tensions and potentials observed in the relationship between social theory and postcolonial thought. Both fields, according to Julian Go's description, have developed not only separately but they even stand in opposition to each other in their very epistemological and institutional constitution. Accordingly, social theory as well as sociology and post-colonial thought belong to two antagonistic "histories and global processes-empire on the one hand and anticolonial resistance on the other […]" (p. 10). With his book, Go endeavors to overcome this divorce. For him, social theory and sociology-urgently and irrevocably-need postcolonial thought in order to liberate themselves from their colonial past and imperial present. Accordingly, a postcolonial intervention in social theory and sociology should converge in a third wave of postcolonial thought, following a first wave represented by intellectuals involved in antiracist and anti-colonial movements, including W. E. B. Du Bois, Aimé Césaire, Frantz Fanon, Amílcar Cabral among others, and a second wave, initiated by Edward Said and continued by authors such as Gayatri Spivak, Homi Bhabha, and Dipesh Chakrabarty who developed postcolonial ideas in the humanities. This line of argument is elaborated throughout the book in a precise, accurate and captivating academic style. Inserting theoretical developments into their historical context, the author reconstructs the first and second waves of postcolonial thought in order to then distinguish two models of criticism postcolonialism addresses: the complicity critique, according to which social theory and sociology have historically cooperated with colonial and imperial enterprises, and the corruption critique which focuses on the colonial episteme of the social sciences. While both types of critique reveal "imprints of empire" in sociology and social theory, these critical assessments, if taken seriously by social scientists, could go further still and help the social sciences improve their "analytical power" (p. 102). More specifically, postcolonial thought lays bare three interrelated major blind spots in sociology and social theory. These are: "metrocentrism", understood as "false universalism", referring to "any instance when the particular and parochial is unreflexively universalized" (p. 94); "analytic bifurcation", which consists of systematically decoupling developments observed in metropolises and colonies (p. 104 ff.) and "substantialism", understood as the assumption "that the basic units and actors of sociological inquiry are substances or essences: as in things, or even systems" (p. 118). After elucidating these shortcomings, Go searches for resources to overcome them in the realm of a new approach he calls "postcolonial relationalism". To counter metrocentrism, postcolonial relationalism focuses on the "subaltern standpoint approach", which aims to recover points of views suppressed by colonialism and imperialism. In contrast to authors associated with indigenous sociology and Southern theories Go rejects the idea of an inherent epistemic superiority of subaltern loci of enunciation. Consequently, subaltern perspectives are not necessarily truer. However, they contribute, according to Go, to the multiplication of "theoretical truths" and bring to light subaltern agency occluded by colonialism and imperialism (p. 173 ff.). Against analytic bifurcation, Go, in line with G. Bhambra, insists on interconnectedness, i.e., the interdependent formation of modern societies in different world regions. Finally, to escape from substantialism, the author relies on relationalism. Relationalism means both that "relations are constitutive of supposed substances" and that units constituted through relations are fluid: "Relations shift and so do the identities they constitute" (p. 121). In very brief and schematic terms, this is the powerful framework Go provides us to reform sociology and social theory from a postcolonial point of view. As is unavoidable in such encompassing enterprises, the book is not free of gaps and sorely missed references. Among contributions left unmentioned and unexplored in the book are both research carried out by social scientists identified with postcolonial thought as well as research developed by more "conventional" sociologists and social theorists who have long sought responses to the challenges enumerated by Julian Go. To start with, the claim for seriously taking into account multiple actors' perspectives has been present in sociology since the appearance of Max Weber's verstehende Soziologie , though Weber himself was not always loyal to his interpretative sociology and silenced "non-Western" subjects, too, as Go correctly notes (p. 177). However, social scientists around the world, drawing on classical sociology, could reconstruct meanings and agency articulated by anticolonial and postcolonial subjects beyond national borders as in the cases of third world women

However, recently, a variety of social actors (descendants of refugee slaves – quilombolas - , Unified Black Movement, indigenous organizations) have been questioning such a discourse, denouncing the historical injustices and the increasing prejudice they have been victims of. The relationship among these actors and the politics and the national public space is ambivalent. On one hand, they depend on the domestic politics as a context for the articulation of their differences and for the fight for the concretizing of their demands. On the other hand, the construction of their protest identity implies denouncing the nation that has conceded them a subordinated place and in searching transnational alliances wh...

To discuss this question the article describes at first two concepts of social integration beyond national borders. The convergent model is based on the understanding that transnational social integration represents an extension of the process offormation of nation-states and of the national public spheres. The second concept, denominated decentred, describes social integration as the increased density of communicational and symbolic exchanges between different social agents, beyond respective national borders, without the formation of a continental public sphere. The second part of the article evaluates the possibilities in the Americas for realizing these two forms of social integration and the possible risks and problems related to each of them, utilizing as case study the anti-racist cooperation between Brazilian an...

Januar 2019 amtierenden Regierung diskutiert.

Social inequalities have conventionally been researched as synchronous processes within the frame... moreSocial inequalities have conventionally been researched as synchronous processes within the frame of national borders and articulated in the concept of class. This means that established scholarship has not adequately considered the historical dimensions and global entanglements or interconnections between class and other social classifications that have shaped existing inequalities. Starting from world system and postcolonial theories as well as from recent debates on transnationalism, the paper first presents a set of resources for overcoming current deficits in the research of inequalities. In order to illustrate how these resources analytically operate, the second part of the paper discusses the case of social inequalities which affect Afrodescendants in Latin America.
