Lafamille desPhilydracées regroupe des plantesmonocotylédones ; elle comprend 5 à 6espèces réparties en 1 à 4genres.

Ce sont des plantes herbacées, pérennes, rhizomateuses ou à racines épaissies, à rosettes, des régions subtropicales à tropicales. (Malaisie,Asie du Sud-Est,Australie).

Laclassification phylogénétique APG II (2003)[1] et laclassification phylogénétique APG III (2009)[2] placent aujourd'hui cette famille dans l'ordre desCommelinales.

Étymologie

Le nom vient du genrePhilydrum dérivé du grecφίλος /philos, ami, etυδώρ /hydor, eau[3].
