NOTES: How to Address a State or State’s Attorney
—-A State/State’s Attorney is a state official, elected in a general election and entitled to be addressed asthe Honorable.

—-Orally you will hear their job title used as an honorific to emphasize or clarify his/her job in an interaction. For example:State Attorney (Name) will be here in five minutes. or State’s Attorney (Surname) will host the event.

—-And the media will frequently use the job before the name to clarify to their readers/viewers who this person is:‘According to State’s Attorney (Name) …’.They may even call the personState Attorney (Name) during an interview.

—-But traditionally and formally their job title is not used in writing as an honorific, in a salutation, or in conversation. Address asMr./Ms. (Surname)
