inIH56 mutant adults display multiple hair cell phenotype and hair polarity defects in both wing hairs and abdominal bristles.

Hairs in the proximal-anterior part of the wing point towards the anterior margin and most cells form multiple hairs in mutant adults.

Mutant clones in the wing show disruption of polarity, as indicated by wing hairs.

Unmarked clones in all regions of the wing display anin phenotype, cells form more than one hair and hairs with an abnormal polarity. Marked clones in the wing indicatein acts autonomously, cells bordering clones are wild type.P{in+12} construct can completely rescue the wing hair phenotype. Heat induced expression ofP{hs-in} can provide nearly complete rescue of the wing hair phenotype, some multiple hairs are still present. Rescue of theinIH56 mutant phenotype byP{hs-in(RGE)} is indistinguishable from rescue byP{hs-in}.

Viable as a homozygote or a hemizygote. Strong thoracic bristle and wing hair phenotype. Percentage of dorsal wing surface cells that display abnormal cell polarity and the percentage of wing cells forming more than one hair is more severe at 18oC than 29oC.

The multiple hair cell and abnormal hair polarity phenotypes observed ininIH56 mutant flies are strongly suppressed by expression offrtzScer\UAS.WALIUM.T:Hsap\MYC under the control ofScer\GAL4Act.PU in the mutant background.

inIH56;dsYAC41/dsUAO71 double mutant adults display hair polarity defects in abdominal bristles that are similarly severe as ininIH56 single mutants andfy2/inIH56 as well asfrtz30/inIH56 double mutants show bristle phenotype that is comparable to each of the single mutants.

The wing hair phenotype ofinIH56mwh1 double mutants is indistinguishable from that ofmwh1 single mutants.

Expression ofin::mwhScer\UAS.cLa under the control ofScer\GAL4Act.PU essentially completely rescues the wing hair defects ofinIH56 mutants.

Expression ofin::mwhScer\UAS.cLa under the control ofScer\GAL4ap-md544 strongly rescues the wing hair defects ofinIH56mwh1 double mutants on the dorsal surface of the wing.

The multiple hair cell phenotype ofdshScer\UAS.cAa expressed fromScer\GAL4ptc-559.1 is additive with the multiple hair phenotypes offy2 andinIH56. When a wing clone is doubly mutant forfz21 andinIH56, domineering nonautonomy of polarity defect offz21 is unaffected. When a wing clone is doubly mutant forfz21 andinIH56 in a genetic background deficient forin, domineering nonautonomy of polarity defect offz21 is suppressed, though polarity defect within the clone is not.
