| “ | The Daein soldiers call this war "the sub-human hunt." You know I hate that word. Daein will change... At least that's what I believed. But now... I can't just stand by. This war is the last straw. I can't fight for Daein anymore. | ” | — Zihark, toLethe |

Zihark (pronounced /ˈzihɑɹk/[key][3]; Japanese:ツイハークZihark) is a traveling mercenary fromDaein who infiltrated a group of anti-laguz vigilantes in Crimea to savelaguz from being hunted.[4] Upon meeting the laguz travelling with theGreil Mercenaries, Zihark decides to aid them in their escape from the Daein army, and assists them in theMad King's War. After the war, he returned to Daein and would eventually helpMicaiah in the war to liberate Daein.
Biography
Laguz sympathies
Zihark was originally from Daein, and had a romantic relationship with a non-tigerlaguz. Unfortunately, his relationship did not last as the pressure from the taboo nature of their relationship was too much for his girlfriend.[5] In honor of his girlfriend, Zihark began to travelTellius as a mercenary to do what he could to stop the oppression of laguz. When he heard thatCrimea was creating an alliance with Gallia, Zihark believed that his dream would become reality, but upon coming to Crimea, found that attitudes towards laguz were as prejudiced as before. Taking matters into his own hands, Zihark joined an anti-laguz vigilante group in the port town of Toha as a double agent to stop laguz from being killed.[4]
The Mad King's War
When theMad King's War began in 645, Zihark was with the Toha vigilantes.Ike and theGreil Mercenaries arrived in Toha, seeking to escape by ship to Begnion, with the laguz in their company hiding their identities. However,Ranulf accidentally revealed himself as a laguz, much to the shock and anger of the townspeople. Upon the news that laguz had been spotted in town, Zihark tried to aid in their escape. He encountered eitherLethe orMordecai, and chose to help their cause by joining them.[6][7] Once the Greil Mercenaries escaped onboard the ship, Zihark continued to journey with them, and would eventually fight with theCrimean army to end the war. After war, Zihark departed for his homeland of Daein.[8]
Daein's emancipation and choosing sides
Years later, in 648, Zihark joined the Daein Liberation Army alongside his former comradesJill andTauroneo to resist the oppression by the occupyingBegnion forces and to protect the lost heir of Daein,Pelleas. Outnumbered, their position was nearly overrun until the Dawn Brigade arrived and assisted the trio in driving off the Begnion forces.[9] After theDawn Brigade merged with army andMicaiah was appointed Vice Commander, Zihark and the Daein Liberation Army fought a series of battles to free Daein from the clutches of the Begnion occupation forces, during which he reunited with many familiar faces from the war three year prior.[10][11][12][13] Ultimately, the Daein army triumphed and retook Nevassa, the nation’s capital.
Not long after its liberation, Micaiah deployed Daein's army on the orders of King Pelleas to fight on the side of Begnion against the Laguz Alliance, with their mission being to ambush the retreating laguz forces on the Ribahn River. Zihark found himself torn between two sides: loyalty to his newly liberated homeland and his long-standing ideals to protect laguz. With friends on both sides of the war, Zihark would be betraying people close to him no matter which path he took. His ultimate decision, whether to remain with Micaiah and Daein or defect to join Ike and the Laguz Alliance, depended on whether he had the opportunity to speak with one of his close friends among the Laguz Alliance.
Remaining with Daein
If Zihark stayed with Daein, he fell into inner turmoil as he faced off against his friends in the Laguz Alliance and struggled to come to terms with having to fight against laguz.[14][15] He, along with the rest of Micaiah's inner circle, would eventually learn that Daein's involvement in the war against the Laguz Alliance was the result ofPelleas being tricked into signing ablood pact withLekain, binding him to Lekain's will. Zihark and the others continued to fight in the coming battles to protect Daein and the lives of its people, maintaining appearances to avoid arousing Lekain's suspicions and buying time to search for a way to break the pact. All the while, Zihark was distraught that his role in the war had become the very antithesis of the ideals he long upheld, replaced with the desperation of ensuring Daein's survival.[16][17]
Defecting to the Laguz Alliance
Alternatively, Zihark can defect to the Laguz Alliance by talking to one of his former allies (Lethe, Mordecai, Brom, or Ilyana). Reminded of the ideals he had resolutely fought for three years earlier, unwilling to slay any more laguz, and having lost any hope he had for Daein to overcome its anti-laguz prejudice, Zihark chose to abandon his country and former allies in Micaiah's army to fight alongside Ike and his old comrades.[18][19][20][21]
As the two armies clashed once again on the Ribahn River, Zihark found himself face-to-face with Daein again, but this time as its enemy. He sought answers from his former compatriots on the Daein side about the reasons for joining the war, only to be met with just as much confusion as he had.[22][23] With none of his questions answered, Zihark would continue to fight alongside the Laguz Alliance and their cause, including when the army eventually merged with Crimean forces and loyalists to Sanaki to form the Apostle's Army. The newly bolstered army once again marched on Daein as a means to cross into Begnion and clashed repeatedly with Micaiah's forces.
By that time, the truth of theBlood Pact had been revealed to his former Daein allies, but this time not to Zihark. As the Apostle’s Army confronted Daein for the final time, Zihark desperately questioned his former compatriots to understand not only why they continued fighting despite overwhelming casualties, but also the reasons behind the atrocities committed since their last encounter. Once again, Zihark was rebuffed, and this time treated as nothing more than a traitor. Quietly, his former companions lamented to themselves that Zihark would be better off not knowing the truth, spared from becoming a victim of the blood pact.[24][25][26][27]
Regardless of his path, whenAshera was awoken, both armies were petrified, halting the conflict. Zihark was among the few spared petrification, and he participated in the battles against theDisciples of Order. After the defeat of Ashera, Zihark would once again travel Tellius as mercenary, settling disputes between beorc and laguz, eventually settling in Gallia.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Zihark is the secondmyrmidon to join the army inPath of Radiance. He has respectable base stats for his join time, having greatskill andspeed, workablestrength, and good sword rank (i.e., able to use theKilling Edge he starts with for no investment). Thus, he needs minimal investment to do well as an infantry sword-using unit. As he does not have a mount, he cannot keep up with units likeTitania,Oscar, andKieran, nor can he make use ofCanto, severely limiting him. His base durability is also weak, so he cannot be too exposed.
Zihark has good growths in strength, skill, and speed, ensuring he can offensively keep up at 1-range (especially withAdept). However, his defensive gains are mediocre. Because of his low durability and swordlock, his enemy phase combat will almost always be limited compared tolance andaxe users, despite his excellent offense. He joins at level 10, making him instantly ready for an earlyMaster Seal promotion if the player so chooses.
Zihark hasAdept, the primary reason to use him over other infantry combat units. Since the player cannot transfer skills to other units inPath of Radiance, keeping it on Zihark is recommended to maximize his combat potential. AVantage scroll works well for Zihark, although he lacks 1-2 range, and Vantage+Adept is not as powerful as Vantage+Wrath or Vantage+Resolve.Astra is another useful skill for Zihark; however, it has a lower activation rate than other good mastery skills, requires removing Adept from him, and rapidly drains weapon durability for lower damage per hit, so the player should use theOccult scroll on another unit.
Zihark has an earth affinity which gives pure avoid. His only support partner with a complementing affinity isMuarim, with a thunder affinity giving some defense and avoid.Ilyana appreciates the avoid boost from Zihark, but her bonuses are lackluster for him.Brom's water affinity does not complement Zihark, as it only gives +1 attack and defense at max support.
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

He can also be recruited if he is talked to byLethe orMordecai, or byBrom orIlyana with an A support inPath of Radiance in Part III, Chapter 7 and Part III, Endgame.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Zihark is a prepromotedSwordmaster onMicaiah's team. He has excellent offensive base stats, with decentstrength and excellentskill andspeed. He also has acrit boost, innateAdept, and comes with aKilling Edge, so he requires no investment to immediately contribute. He is an excellent user of theBrave Sword through Part I thanks to his good crit and Adept. However, his base durability is mediocre (though not as bad as most tier 1 units), and being asword-locked unit, he lacks good 1-2 range for much of the game, with his only easily accessible ranged option beingWind Edges, which areweak andinaccurate.Path of Radiance Zihark caps strength, skill, and speed on average, so PoR transfers benefiting him significantly.
With excellent skill and speed growths, he will cap them quickly before promotion (especially with PoR transfers). Though his other growths are mediocre,BEXP helps patch them in the long run, especially strength. Through Part III, Zihark's offense remains excellent but his durability does not keep up, so it is easy for him to get overwhelmed especially by enemy laguz (this is heavily mitigated if he is supportingNolan orVolug). When promoted, his crit boost increases and he learnsAstra, further amplifying his good offense, though he is still stuck with swords.
In Part III, Chapters6,7, andendgame, the player is presented with the opportunity to have Zihark defect from Micaiah's team and joinIke's team, which can be done if he speaks toLethe orMordecai (orBrom andIlyana if they had an A support with Zihark transferred fromPath of Radiance) during these chapters, being one of the two units from Micaiah's team (the other beingJill) who can join Ike's team in Part III. This presents an interesting case for him and the player: on one hand, unlike Jill, Zihark can benefit more from switching sides as this especially means that he will no longer be in danger of fighting dangerously fast and hard-hitting enemy laguz (especiallyTigers) for the remainder of Part III, owing to his mediocre durability. He can also take any valuable items with him to Ike's team that Ilyana has not or could not take with her before she leaves at the end ofPart I, endgame, such as theBrave Bow andShine tomes; the latter is notable as Shine tomes are not sold during Ike's Part III chapters (despite having onelight magic user in their group), and Zihark can procure some forRhys to use if he is being used for combat. On the other hand, Micaiah's team will need all the help they could get to survive their chapters, and Zihark himself is a solid Swordmaster and laterTrueblade who can serve well in Micaiah's Part III chapters, especially if the other sword fighter of the group,Edward, was killed in battle or insufficiently trained. With a double-Earth A support along with a few speed growths, he will be facing incredibly low or even 0 hit rates by enemies throughout Part III, and will be a key frontliner for Micaiah's team.
In Part IV, he will likely be underlevelled, but if used frequently enough before Part IV, he can catch up without too much investment. As an infantry unit, he does not want to join Micaiah's team due to thedesert chapter, but he works well on the other two teams. His excellent speed ensures he candouble most units in endgame, though he is limited by his class's low strength cap, meaning he has trouble with theGenerals and dragons (unless given theWyrmslayer).
Zihark has innate Adept, which complements his good crit rate and the Brave Sword.Tauroneo'sResolve and Edward'sWrath complement innate Adept, though unfortunately he won't have space for all three simultaneously. He can also use theVantage scroll from 1-E and complement it withLeonardo'sCancel, both with high activation thanks to good speed.Paragon through Part III can help Zihark catch up to other units when Part IV comes around, though there are better users of it.
Zihark has anearthaffinity which gives a massive boost toavoid. Nolan is a popular partner due to being another good infantry unit with another earth affinity, giving both units +45 avoid at max level. Volug also has an earth affinity, and in addition has a faster support growth rate than normal with Zihark, and despite being a laguz, it is not hard to keep them near each other especially through Part III.Fiona as well has an earth affinity but she requires significant investment to catch up, and most of her chapters are not friendly forcavaliers. Micaiah can also be a good partner, as her dark affinity gives Zihark an appreciated attack boost and also a bit more avoid.Tormod also gives an attack boost with his fire affinity, but due to his terrible availability through the game, this is not recommended. If Zihark defects to the Laguz Alliance, he will lose access to any supports he built up with any units in Part I (excluding Ilyana) until Part IV.

Zihark is a kind and principled mercenary who is an idealist at heart, wishing to bring about harmony between laguz and beorc, a goal that was shaped by his past romantic relationship with a laguz.[4][5] He willingly risks his life to achieve this goal, such as his infiltration of the Toha vigilantes to protect laguz or his fight for the liberation of his home country of Daein alongside Jill and Tauroneo.[6][7] Though a skilled swordsman, he possesses an empathy that manifests through his efforts to deescalate conflicts, preferring a peaceful resolution rather than to engage in a fight.[29][30][31] He is typically calm and composed, though he shows outbursts of emotion with his anger when confronting Izuka, whose actions in creating theFeral Ones are the antithesis of Zihark's ideals,[32] or his demands to Tauroneo to understand how Daein became a pawn to Begnion, culminating with Zihark declaring, "If my country can't save itself, then I'LL save it!"[25]
Just as important to him as his laguz ideals is his loyalty to those he deems just and good at heart. As a wandering mercenary, he has no particular strong attachment to any country, including his homeland, but he gravitates towards leaders like Ike, Pelleas, and Micaiah, the former whose ideals match his own and the latter two due to their kindheartedness. In these people, he places his trust in their judgement, which is a core reason behind his indecision in whether to defect from Daein when Pelleas and Micaiah give orders that conflict with his ideals. At the same time, the bonds he has with those close to him, like Ilyana or Brom, are also the catalyst for his defection from Daein.[21][20] His personal loyalty to those closest to him further manifests in battle with Zihark refusing to raise his sword against them, even when on opposing sides.[22][24][27][28]
When interacting with his comrades, Zihark is shown to be warm, approachable, and thoughtful. He has a keen memory for names and faces and takes the initiative to learn of his allies' backgrounds, sometimes knowing details about them before even meeting them for the first time.[33][34] He treats his allies equally no matter their background or age, as seen in his friendship with Brom, a farmer, and kind interactions with Tormod and Meg. He often invites his comrades out for meals, buying dinners for Ilyana and Muarim, and on one occasion, insisting on repaying Brom after he covered Zihark's meal. Despite his talents in swordplay, handiness in equipment repair and weapon maintenance,[1] and even knowledge of mathematics, Zihark remains humble, downplaying his skills, shown in his conversations with Brom or while fighting Nailah.[35][36] He possesses a playful streak, teasing Ilyana about her ravenous hunger and joking around with Tormod and Muarim in the middle of battle.[37][12][13]
Beneath his friendly exterior, Zihark is a rather guarded individual, not opening up very easily to others. Only Muarim learns directly of his lost love, while Zihark danced around Ike and Brom's inquiries of his motivations and background. He also never revealed his Daein origins until he was seen fighting for Daein's liberation in person.[11] This secretiveness of his may be born out of necessity, being from a country that reveled at the idea of hunting laguz, while his own beliefs could have led him to be ostracized or considered a traitor if they were revealed, and Zihark's reflections after defecting from Daein indicate that he hoped that with a new King, Daein could have changed from this bigoted past.[22]

Zihark: Of course, Commander Ike.
Ike: You and I haven't had very many opportunities to talk, and I--
Zihark: You don't think you can trust me?
Ike: No, it's not that. I'm just curious--I was surprised to see anyone in Toha who chose to fight on the side of the laguz.
Zihark: I joined the Toha vigilantes solely for the purpose of saving laguz. I'm not from Crimea, but when I heard she had joined with Gallia, I envisioned my perfect world, one in which the laguz could live normal lives, free of oppression. However, when I came to Crimea, I found things were no different there than in any other beorc nation.
Ike: It was the same for me. I couldn't allow myself to ignore these problems any longer.
Zihark: I'm happy to hear it. Of all the beorc I've ever met, you're the only one who shares my conviction.
Ike: Zihark, is there...some other reason you defend the laguz?
Zihark: I don't follow you.
Ike: You see, I was born in Gallia, or so I've been told. I just wondered if you had a similar reason guiding you.
Zihark: ...Of course I have my reasons. Would you be upset if I didn't want to discuss them? My reasons are...extremely personal.
Ike: No, it's no problem. I wanted a better understanding of what kind of man you are, and I have that now.
Zihark: Can I ask what that is?
Ike: You are a good man. I'm glad to have you along.
Zihark: I'm glad to be here. I feel I'm finally able to do the kind of good I've longed to do for years." —Ike and Zihark in theZihark base conversation,Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑5.05.1"Zihark: Muarim.
Muarim: What is it, Zihark?
Zihark: I picked this for you.
Muarim: This is...
Zihark: I've heard the beast tribes are fond of the leaves of this kind of herb. It's fairly uncommon, but I've learned how to spot it.
Muarim: Um...
Zihark: I picked the wrong herb, didn't I?
Muarim: No, no... It's fine. Unfortunately, it is not something that we tigers have a nose for.
Zihark: Oh... I didn't know that. Sorry. An old girlfriend of mine loved the scent of it. I guess I just assumed that all laguz liked the smell as much as she did.
Muarim: You...were involved with a laguz?
Zihark: Yeah.
Muarim: That is very uncommon. I've heard stories of love affairs between beorc and laguz. It must have been difficult. I do not imagine either society would have accepted it with ease.
Zihark: It...was too much for her. We couldn't be married, and the pressure was too much for her to stay with me. But I've never loved another woman. To this day, I think that I never shall.
Muarim: Can I have that bundle of herbs?
Zihark: What? But I thought...
Muarim: It has no effect on me, it's true, but I accept the gesture of kindness you have shown in bringing it to me. And I apologize for bringing up a painful memory of your own.
Zihark: Thanks. You're very kind. Heh. I guess that makes us even, doesn't it?" — Zihark andMuarim, A support,Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑6.06.1"Zihark: Ah!
Lethe: Grrr! Flee. You're Crimean... I cannot fight you.
Zihark: Hold on! Please! ...I am not an enemy to laguz.
Lethe: L-laguz...? How do you--
Zihark: I joined this vigilante group because I knew it would afford me a chance to help you flee. Listen, I'll distract the townspeople. While they're worried about me, you can make good your escape.
Lethe: I cannot trust the word of a human.
Zihark: ...I see. Well, if I cut down these vigilantes, will you believe me?
Lethe: Huh?
Zihark: One? Two? All of them? How many do you want? Just give the word and I'll start the cutting!
Lethe: Hsss! Quiet! Why? Why would you...
Zihark: I want to help you. ...That's all.
Lethe: ... I see... You're not an enemy. That much I'll believe...
Zihark: Thank you. Now, you must hurry away from this place.
Lethe: No, I cannot flee. I have fr-friends with whom I must board a ship.
Zihark: Will you not desist? It's much too dangerous. The vigilantes and Daeins want nothing more than to kill laguz!
Lethe: I'm not leaving.
Zihark: I see... If that's your stance, then I've no choice.
Lethe: Hm?
Zihark: I will join your group.
Lethe: Don't... Don't be ridiculous!
Zihark: What's your name?
Lethe: I am Lethe, but--
Zihark: That's a good name.
Lethe: That's beside the point! You--
Zihark: I am Zihark. Well met, Lethe! Whoops! I don't think we have time for formal introductions. Let's hurry!
Lethe: H-hold it! I have not agreed to this!" —Lethe and Zihark inChapter 11,Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑7.07.1"Zihark: Ah!
Mordecai: You are a vigilante. We must avoid vigilantes. You should flee.
Zihark: You would speak so to the vigilante group that's hunting you? You're a kind laguz, aren't you?
Mordecai: Hm? My words are not good. You must go quickly.
Zihark: No, you are the one who should flee. Leave the rest to me. I'll confuse the townsfolk and give you time to run.
Mordecai: What? Why?
Zihark: I don't want to see any laguz harmed, so I joined these vigilantes as a double agent.
Mordecai: Hmm...? I am confused. But...you do not smell like an enemy. Our group must get on that ship. We are taking it to Begnion.
Zihark: Will you not desist? It's much too dangerous. The vigilantes and the Daeins desire nothing more than to kill laguz!
Mordecai: Even so, we will go.
Zihark: I see... If that's your stance, then I've no choice.
Mordecai: ...
Zihark: I will join your group.
Mordecai: You will betray your friends?
Zihark: I told you, they're not my friends. I am an ally to the laguz. What? You need proof? There!
Mordecai: Why do you drop your blade? That bright metal tool is your only fang.
Zihark: I want you to believe me. ...Please. You must believe me.
Mordecai: ...I believe you. I am Mordecai, warrior of Gallia. Who are you?

Zihark: Ilyana! It's been a while.
Ilyana: Too long, Zihark...
Zihark: So you remember my name!
Ilyana: How could I forget you, Zihark? Why, I think of you often! You treated me to food...glorious food... On 23 separate occasions! But who's counting?
Zihark: Apparently, you are. And now, might I request something in return?
Ilyana: Well, um, yes. What exactly did you have in mind?
Zihark: For you, something sweet! You join our merry band, and together, we fight for Daein's freedom. I'm counting on you, my dear. You wouldn't want to disappoint me, would you?

Zihark: Sothe? Where did you come from? What are you doing here?
Sothe: Hello, Zihark. I see you're fighting Begnion soldiers. I assume you're siding with Daein here?
Zihark: That's right. This is my homeland. These are my people.
Sothe: Oh, really? I didn't know you were from Daein.
Zihark: Yep, I'm a Daein, through and through.
Sothe: All that time we fought together, and I never knew.

Zihark: You won't surrender?
Lethe: I am a soldier. I will fight to my death.
Zihark: ... I knew you'd say that. Then I'm coming with you. I'm at your service, Lethe. Just like old times, yeah?
Lethe: What?! Why?
Zihark: The Daein soldiers call this war "the sub-human hunt." You know I hate that word. Daein will change... At least that's what I believed. But now... I can't just stand by. This war is the last straw. I can't fight for Daein anymore.

Zihark: But...
Mordecai: Zeehork? Zeehar-ack? Zi...hark? Ahh! That is good! Zi-hark!
Zihark: Mordecai... Don't you understand? We're now–
Mordecai: I know. Mordecai is your friend. Allies we are. It does not matter who we fight for.

Zihark: Brom...
Brom: Ah, it sure is great to see ya! You're looking mighty fine. Seem a bit sad, though.
Zihark: Oh, I'm all right, Brom. How's the family?
Brom: Oh, they're doin' great. We had ourselves some troubles, but Queen Elincia took care of it. Ah, speakin' of my family! About your engagement to one of my daughters... Have you given it any extra thought? All my daughters are eager to marry. Just say the word, now!
Zihark: What? All of your daughters? You told all of your daughters about me?
Brom: Ah, they're all such dears! I can't favor one over the others, can I? So, what do you say? My second daughter is startin' to look a lot like me! Nice, soft cheeks.
Zihark: Um, well, I thought I was pretty clear on this the last time we went over it...
Brom: She left for Daein to see you. Have you run into her yet? Her name's Meg. Nice girl. She looks a lot like me.
Zihark: You haven't changed at all, Brom. You're still the same good man that I remember from three years ago. I'm really glad I ran into you, Brom. Now I remember what I was fighting for back then. And now I know what I have to do.
Brom: Hm? What're you goin' on about, son?

Zihark: I can't do that... Daein has just freed itself. I can't betray it now.
Ilyana: Even if you have been ordered by Daein to hunt down laguz?
Zihark:I-I just...
Ilyana: But this isn't you! When I met you, you were so nice, and you never doubted yourself or your friends. You even risked your own life to fight on behalf of the laguz. And now you're throwing it all away...
Zihark: ... Ilyana.
Ilyana: Yes?
Zihark: Thank you. You've opened my eyes.
Ilyana: Pardon?
Zihark: I will leave the Daein army. My friends in Daein are dear to me, but I refuse to take part in any "hunt," or lie to myself any longer.

Zihark: As you can see, I'm with the Laguz Alliance now. I can't lie to myself anymore, Micaiah. I'm sorry.
Micaiah: I see...
Zihark: Tell me, Micaiah. Why did Daein become an enemy of the laguz? Daein has a new king now. Why can't it escape the grip of Begnion?!
Micaiah: I don't know, Zihark. I wish I did. I'm sorry...
Zihark: No, I'm the one who should be sorry. I know this isn't your fault. It's just that...now I wonder if the time I've spent fighting to liberate Daein was well spent. It makes me sad.
Micaiah: Will you cut me down?
Zihark: That depends on you, Micaiah. Will you try to kill me?
Micaiah: You are an enemy of Daein now. But... I... How could I? How could I possibly kill you?
Zihark: I feel the same way. I couldn't possibly hurt you. However, fighting laguz is something I will not do for anyone. Where do we go from here?
Micaiah: I... I don't know..." — Zihark approachesMicaiah inPart III Chapter 7,Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn - ↑"Zihark: Meg.
Meg: Sir Zihark? Wh-what's wrong? What's going on?

Meg: No! Wh-what are you saying?
Zihark: I know this is a horrible thing for me to say, but listen. Please leave the battlefield. I don't want to see you get hurt.

Micaiah: I've nothing to say to you.
Zihark: I see. No words to waste on a deserter like me, is that it? I'm sorry I wasted your time.
Micaiah: Zihark--

Tauroneo: There is nothing to say. We have parted ways. That is all.
Zihark: What are you trying to hide?! Daein has now committed atrocities on par with those committed by Ashnard! I want to know why you'd continue to fight a war like this!
Tauroneo: And I say that there is no need for you to know. Mercenary Zihark, return to your allies in the apostle's army.
Zihark: I will find out what's going on here! If my country can't save itself, then I'LL save it! But I'll never raise my sword against you. Good-bye for now, General. I hope our next meeting goes better.

Pelleas: Zihark. What is there to talk about? You've deserted your country and your people.
Zihark: I just don't understand. I thought I knew you. You are a good, kind man. Why do you continue to fight for those bloodsucking senators?
Pelleas: I don't want to talk about it.
Zihark: Your Majesty...
Pelleas: It doesn't concern you anymore. You've abandoned Daein--and us. If you want to stop us, use your sword--not words.
Zihark: My sword and my allegiance do lie elsewhere now, it's true. But I am not without honor. I will not draw my sword against the man I call my king, no matter what.

Brom: Howdy! Nice to meet you! Fixing a shoulder guard is tough work. What do you do when you're not at war? You work in leather?
Zihark: Nope. Just a swordsman.
Brom: Huh...I didn't know swordsmen could fix something like this. That's quite a skill!
Zihark: I taught myself. Mercenaries don't make good money, you know. I can't afford to visit a tradesman... And...done! All right, that should hold.
Brom: Wow... Isn't that something? I have to teach my youngest son how to do that!
Zihark: How many children do you have, Brom?

Brom: Well, even if you want to, I don't even remember how much I paid.
Zihark: The total came to four fifty. I'll give you two and a quarter, and we can call it even.

Zihark: That's just my nature. Most mercenaries are basically lazy and sloppy... I think I drive them crazy.
Brom: Nah. That just makes you even more of a true man! I bet you're pretty popular with the young lasses, eh? Eh?!
Zihark: Um...not...really. It would take an... eccentric girl to love a guy like me.
Brom: I tell you, Zihark, sometimes I don't get this world. I mean, even a simpleton like me has a family!
Zihark: Ha! I'm telling you, Brom, you're a good man. Trust me on this one.
Brom: Oh, I have an idea! And it's a humdinger! You should marry my daughter!
Zihark: Um... Er... I should what?
Brom: I don't mean to sound like a proud poppa, but they're all great girls! And if I like you this much, I'm sure that my daughters will like you, too.

Ilyana: They do?
Zihark: Oh, yes they do! You're a beef jerky thief, aren't you? I know about the apple pie incident, too. Yeah... I know your tricks. Is it true that you don't remember their names, even after they buy you an expensive meal? That's just terrible.
Ilyana: No! It's just that... I collapse into a coma when I get too hungry! That's why I've got to accept everyone's generous food offers.
Zihark: Then at least remember their names! Even if you had ulterior motives, everyone likes... Er... Is kind to you.
Ilyana: Sorry...

Ilyana: All right.
Zihark: Well, shall we get going?
Ilyana: Pardon me?
Zihark: You're hungry, right? I feel bad about preaching to you, so this dinner is on me.
Ilyana: Are you sure?
Zihark: I'm sure. I can't have you going hungry on me. However, I'm not rich. All I can afford is two dinners.
