Continent

Ylisse

Ylisse (pronounced /ɪˈlis/[key][1]; Japanese:イーリスIris) is a kingdom located in the south-east of thecontinent of the same name. It borders theTheocracy of Plegia to the west, andRegna Ferox to the north. In the distant past, the territory now comprising Ylisse was part of the Holy Kingdom ofArchanea, and the island kingdom ofTalys. Ylisse is ruled by a monarch, known as theExalt; at the beginning of the events ofFire Emblem Awakening,Emmeryn is the Exalt.

Prior to the events ofAwakening, the previous Exalt,Chrom's father, waged a terrible war on Plegia, with the intent of wiping out theGrimleal, a cult seeking to resurrect the Fell DragonGrima. The war ended with his death, and ever since then, his daughter Emmeryn had sought to repair relations between her nation and Plegia. Unfortunately,Gangrel, the king of Plegia, sought only to conquer Ylisse, a desire that led both him and Emmeryn to their downfalls.

Trivia

  • Nino's mother shares her name with the Japanese name of Ylisse,Iris.[2]
  • The term "Halidom" is a reference toArchanea, though this was muddled in the localization. The Japanese term for "Halidom" is "Holy Kingdom" (聖王国), the same as the Holy Kingdom of Archanea, the nation Ylisse is a successor to.
    • Similarly, Exalt is "Holy King" (聖王) in Japanese, and is not related at all to Exalted Falchion, which is "divine sword Falchion" (神剣ファルシオン) in Japanese, a term used in dialogue of the Archanea games that was translated as "the divine blade Falchion" inShadow Dragon.
      • Holy King also referred toSeliph at the end ofGenealogy of the Holy War, andAlm at the end ofGaiden and its remake (translated as "Exalted King" for Alm's DLC Einherjar card inAwakening, and "Saint-King" inShadows of Valentia).
