Escaping Tarrah may be difficult with all these civilians in tow...
— Dryas

Yearning to Breathe Free (Japanese:自由を求めてDemanding Freedom) is theside quest of the fourteenth chapter ofFire Emblem: Thracia 776. In order to play this chapter, the player must have visited at least three houses within the city, excluding the house whereHomer is recruited, inthe previous chapter.

Plot

Main article:Yearning to Breathe Free/Script

After receiving the reassurance fromArion thatTarrah would come underThracian protection,Leif's liberation army flees the city with MayorLinoan in tow. As they make their way through a mountain valleyDryas notes that several groups of civilian refugees from Tarrah are tailing Leif's group in hopes of escapingthe Empire. Linoan tried to convince them to stay in Tarrah for their safety but they were unconvinced.

As they continue through the valley, Leif and the refugees end up ambushed by theLoptrian bishopCodda. He sendsMisha'sPegasus Knight squadron and severalDark Mages withRewarp staves to flank from the mountains. Leif's forces protect the civilians and defeat Codda and his underlingEichmann and escape out of the valley.

Shortly before everyone departs,Lewyn appears beforeAugust and tells him that the fall of Tarrah was expected. He tells August that he is going toOrgahil and will then be returning toIsaach, presumably to begin assistingSeliph in raising his liberation army. He then tells August that they will meet again in one year.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

Be careful when deployingDalsin to this chapter. It is possible that Dalsin cannot reach the escape point on this map, as armored units cannot cross over the mountain tiles on their own. It is possible to get him past the mountains by having another unitrescue him. This only works if he has under 19constitution, so if he has gained several points of constitution since joining he will either need to be left behind or left undeployed. Using theWarp staff is also an option, though the Warp staff has much better applications than this.

ThePegasus Riders in this chapter are laughably weak, even byThracia standards. Most of your units will be able to fend them off, even if they are rescuing a civilian. That being said, the mountains means that they have a tendency to capture any unarmed unit, such as the civilians, and thanks to the mountains rescuing them can be challenging. It is not recommended to bring units likeTina who cannot equip a weapon for this reason, and Linoan should be given some sort of tome to prevent her items from being stolen.

The Dark Mages deal significant damage, but they are very slow so killing them is not too difficult. A lot of them carryRewarp staves that can be captured as well, which can be exploitable as they cannot act after rewarping. Additionally, enemy Rewarp casters prioritize repositioning themselves near other existing enemies; if there's no other enemy near the player to Rewarp to, they won't Rewarp or will Rewarp to a position that isn't immediately threatening. Due to the lack of "anchor" enemies for them to Rewarp to on this map, they become reliant on the Pegasus Riders to be able to Rewarp forwards; otherwise, they won't move in unless you stumble near another enemy reinforcement.

The big threats of the chapter are the bosses:Codda has a Fenrir tome and, due to the fog, can easily catch the player off guard.Eichmann is very fast - to the point where no magic user can double him, moves, and is very dangerous; he has a chance to kill any unit without acrusader scroll thanks to his valuableKiller Axe and FCM of 2, and he also hasAdept and 2Action, potentially letting him get more attacks in than expected.

The player should be mindful of the civilians, as the Pegasus Riders can swoop in andCanto away before the player can react. TheTorch staff andTorch are both very useful for scouting the Pegasus Riders, as well as seeing the bosses ahead of time. The Dark Mages are less dangerous in this regard as they cannot Canto, but if a Dark Mage cannot capture a civilian but can attack they will usually one-shot them.

One may consider skipping this chapter altogether, asLinoan will join the party in the next chapter regardless, there are no new recruitable characters, and ranked runs do not benefit from taking extra turns.

Trivia

  • At the start of the chapter,Dryas says that approximately 600 citizens of Tarrah are followingLeif's forces in groups.[1] The maximum number of civilian units appearing on the map is six, which may imply that each Civilian unit on the map is meant to represent roughly 100 fleeing citizens.
  • The way to the escape route in this chapter is covered by hillterrain. BecauseDalsin is an armored unit, he cannot cross the hills; and if he has 20 constitution, he cannot berescued and carried across them. Because of this, if a 20-constitution Dalsin is deployed, he will have to be left behind or moved past the hills by theWarp orRescue staves.
