Xane (Japanese:チェイニーCheine) is an ArchaneanManakete and the only character in theFire Emblem series of theFreelancer class. Initially, he claims to be from a far away land, and that all of his kin can transform as he does, though no other Manakete is shown to have his ability to transform into other people, though it may have something to do with him discarding hisdragonstone.
Xane is met inChapter 16, where he is being held captive by theDolhr army for his ability toshape shift with the intention of forcing him into service. If spoken to withMarth, he will instead join theAltean army, serving through the remainder of theWar of Shadows.[2]

Xane's class—Freelancer—allows him to copy theclass and stats of another unit, though not theirinventory. Xane is more or less as good as whatever unit you choose to imitate. Ultimately, you can't go wrong with a second version of one of your best units, which makes Xane an excellent unit who is always useful. There is, however, a necessary caveat to his usefulness in faster clears: because transforming takes a turn, Xane will be unable to contribute to much on turn 1; as such, Xane may be incredibly useful for two-turn clears, but will be inferior to a unit slightly less strong than your best or an additionalCurate orBishop capable of usingWarp for one-turns.
Xane waiting for Marth in Mamorthod, the desert of death.
Xane appeared to Marth in the desert of Mamorthod after Marth traversed it on orders from Gotoh to come to Thabes Tower. He initially disguised himself in the guise of Tiki, and pretended to confess his love for Marth. Marth was shocked by this, but Xane revealed himself. He revealed he was ordered by Gotoh as Marth's guide. First he escorted Marth's army through the Fire Dragons' valley, explaining the history of the dragons, earth dragons, and Falchion to him. He also revealed that he, Gotoh, and Tiki are divine dragons. He next escorted Marth through the land of the ice dragons, and explained more of the history of the Manaketes and divine dragons. He also revealed that he disliked humans, although he did take a liking to Marth. After Marth's forces made it though the frozen land he informed Marth about the Shield of Seals and the five orbs, and discussed the location of all the orbs. After this he fought with Marth's forces for the rest of the war.

Similar to his previous incarnation inShadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, Xane is the only member of theFreelancer class in both Books ofMystery of the Emblem. As a Freelancer Xane can copy the stats and class features of almost any unit in the game, naturally making him one of the game's most powerful units. He fulfills this role mostly the same in both books, just with different units available to transform into and slightly more available chapters in Book 2. However, there are several restrictions to this feature to keep in mind. He can transform into theLordMarth, theThievesJulian andRickard, and the dancerPhina, however he cannot use Marth's ability to seize or visit villages, the two Thieves' ability to open doors and chests, or Phina's ability to dance. He also is incapable of transforming into the ManaketesTiki andBantu completely, and he cannot use the personal weapons of any unit that has them likeLinde'sAura tome orYuliya'sRescue staff. Additionally, Xane does not copy theHP of the unit he copies, instead he retains his own personal HP; this makes Xane fairly frail, with a personal base of 18 and 20 HP in Book 1 and 2 respectively. He can level up HP, with a decent 50% growth, but he does not gain experience in combat while transformed, so the only way to gain experience points without untransformed combat is transforming, which gives only 10 experience points at a time. For this reason, Xane can benefit greatly from using anAngelic Robe, although there are other units who take good advantage of the limited amount you receive. Lastly, Xane has to spend a turn transforming, which on certain maps can cause Xane to fall behind the action, particularly in maps that are warp-skipped. For Book 1 there is no way for Xane to move again after he transforms, however in Book 2 Phina can dance for him or theAnew staff can refresh everyone's turn including Xane, which mitigates the issue somewhat. All of these limitations make it so that while Xane can become a copy of most of your strongest units, he is never quite as useful as the juggernauts he can imitate. However, the utility Xane offers is still very helpful, but he requires thoughtful strategy to reach the heights he is capable of. Xane cannot change his transformation for the 7-10 turns the transformation lasts, so it is worthwhile to decide who you want Xane to transform into at the start of a map and tailor Xane's starting deployment space and inventory accordingly. He also copies the target's movement, which is very helpful with how strong the boots are, especially in indoor maps where he will be the only unit able to keep up with the boots user. Xane is incredibly versatile with what he contributes on any given map: from the excellent flying combat of a unit likePalla, to the various utilities of a staff user likeWendell, and is a useful unit on every map he can be deployed on.
Xane appears inChapter 16 as an enemy unit, though he is not aggressive. He was captured byDolhr and forced to work in their service, though he states he had no intention to waste his talents on such a country.[3] After he is freed from his cell and Marth speaks to him, Xane accompanies Marth for the rest of the war.

Xane joins in Chapter 16 ofShadow Dragon as a level 1Freelancer. As a Freelancer, Xane can transform into any of the player's units; transforming copies all the unit's stats except for their current HP—Xane's max HP increases, but he stays at his earlier HP—but uses a turn. Xane's level and stats are functionally irrelevant, as he will spend entire battles using another unit's stats.
Xane requires a turn to transform, and because of that, he cannot use his copied stats until turn 2 at earliest; as such, Xane cannot contribute to clearing a map in one turn. However, Xane can contribute on slower playthroughs; a copy of the strongest unit will generally be more useful than the eighth- or ninth-strongest unit.
