Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes (Japanese:ファイアーエムブレム無双 風花雪月Fire Emblem Unrivaled: Wind, Flower, Snow, Moon) is aFire Emblem series game announced in the February 2022 Nintendo Direct, and released worldwide on June 24, 2022.Warriors: Three Hopes is a crossover between theFire Emblem series and theDynasty Warriors series; it is a successor toFire Emblem Warriors—the previous crossover withDynasty Warriors—and is based in the setting ofFire Emblem: Three Houses.

Plot

Warriors: Three Hopes takes place in an alternate continuity in relation toThree Houses, where Byleth has never joined the Academy and this time has an antagonistic role, called solely as the "Ashen Demon" by most characters.

Prior to the game's story,Shez is defeated byByleth in combat and nearly killed, only to be saved byArval. Shez then wanders the continent to train for a rematch. They eventually run into some students in the forest. They help the students to defeat the bandits they were chased by and are offered to visit the students' camp. There,Alois asks them to return toGarreg Mach Monastery alongside him and the students and faculty members. At the monastery, Shez is allowed to join one of the academy's three houses.Jeritza becomes their new professor.

Black Eagles

Shortly after, they are informed of their first mission: to eliminate the remainders of Kostas's bandits. During the battle, the group findsMonica in the basement of the bandits' hideout and helps her to escape. Monica reveals that she has been kidnapped by the monastery's librarianTomas, prompting the church to attempt to capture him. While they attempt to capture him, Tomas shapeshifts into Solon, and disappears. Shez witnesses this, which makes them wonder about their own mysterious powers.

Edelgard andHubert decide to use the opportunity presented to them and reveal the true nature of the empire's regent,Lord Arundel, toRhea. With the aid of theKnights of Seiros, they infiltrate the Imperial palace, captureDuke Aegir, and defeat Lord Arundel. However, before they can capture him, Lord Arundel shapeshifts into Thales and disappears. In the meantime, the other two nations of Fódlan experienced their own political struggles, causing Rhea to close the officer's academy. Shez is offered a position in Edelgard's new military.

Three years later, Edelgard declares war on the Church of Seiros, claiming it to be the reason for the struggles of her Empire. She capturesGarreg Mach Monastery and forces the Church to retreat to thekingdom, preparing to invade the kingdom next. During her invasion, she receives word that the troops that were sent to theLeicester Alliance were surrounded through one ofClaude's schemes, forcing her to retreat and rescue her troops. Once the troops are saved, the Imperial army returns to the kingdom front, defending the fortress city of Arianrhod against a siege led byDimitri himself. They then return to Enbarr to reorganize.

Six months later,Edelgard andClaude decide to make a pact, ending the war with theLeicester Alliance. Edelgard then returns to the kingdom front, quickly taking outRodrigue andBaron Dominic along the way. The Imperial army also clashes withJeralt's Mercenaries again, and depending on the player's actions, either recruit them to their cause or defeat and kill Jeralt. The Imperial army is then forced to return to the empire to deal with an attack led bythose who slither in the dark and a coup led by theFormer Duke Aegir. Once the problems within the Empire are dealt with, they prepare to advance against both the kingdom and the church by attacking them through Ailell with the help of the Alliance.

If Byleth and Jeralt were recruited, the battle ends with Dimitri and Seteth being forced to retreat. Fearing an attack, the Imperial army makes for Garreg Mach Monastery. Along the way, Byleth is attacked by Shez. While Edelgard and her army attempt to intervene, she and the other house leaders, as well as Shez are trapped inZahras byEpimenides. They manage to escape by killing Epimenides, andArval along with him.

If Byleth and Jeralt were not recruited, Byleth manages to convince Claude to turn on the empire, turning the battle into a three-way battle. At the end, Byleth appears and attempts to avenge Jeralt. The battle ends with Shez defeating them.

The Imperial army arrives at the monastery, which is under attack by both the Knights of Seiros and those who slither in the dark. The battle ends with Rhea andThales' deaths. The game ends with a narration describing that the Imperial army's battle is not over.

Blue Lions

Shortly after, they are informed of their first mission: to eliminate the remainders of Kostas's bandits. During the battle, the group findsMonica in the basement of the bandits' hideout and helps her to escape. Monica reveals that she has been kidnapped by the monastery's librarian,Tomas, prompting the church to attempt to capture him. While they attempt to capture him, Tomas shapeshifts into Solon and disappears. Shez witnesses this, which makes them wonder about their own mysterious powers.

Dimitri receives word that his uncle,Rufus, has seized control over the kingdom capital ofFhirdiad and returns to the kingdom, ultimately being forced to execute his uncle. In the meantime, the other two nations of Fódlan experienced their own political struggles, causing Rhea to close the officer's academy. Shez is offered a position in Dimitri's private army.

Three years later, Edelgard declares war on the Church of Seiros, and Dimitri decides to grantRhea and the knights of Seiros refuge in the kingdom. In retaliation, the empire declares war on the kingdom and quickly gains the support of the kingdom's western nobles. The kingdom army's efforts to restore peace in Faerghus ultimately result in a clash withEdelgard's forces in the fortress city ofArianrhod, where Edelgard is defeated and ultimately abducted byThales.

Thales makesDuke Aegir the new regent of the empire, while the kingdom army makes a pact with the Leicester Alliance and goes on the offensive, launching an attack of their own on the empire. On their way, they clash with Jeralt's Mercenaries once more, and depending on the player's actions, either recruit them to their cause or defeat and kill Jeralt. The alliance and the kingdom decide to march throughAilell to take backGarreg Mach Monastery and kill regent Aegir on the way.

If Byleth and Jeralt were recruited, Shez attacks Byleth on the way to the monastery. While Dimitri and his army attempt to intervene, he and the other house leaders as well as Shez are trapped in Zahras by Epimenides. They manage to escape by killing Epimenides and Arval along with him. If Byleth and Jeralt were not recruited, Byleth appears after regent Aegir was killed and is ultimately slain by Shez.

The kingdom army, with the aid of the alliance, takes back Garreg Mach and kills Thales. While Edelgard survives the battle, her fate is left unclear. The kingdom and alliance continue their advance against the empire.

Golden Deer

Shortly after, they are informed of their first mission: to eliminate the remainders of Kostas's bandits. During the battle, the group findsMonica in the basement of the bandits' hideout and helps her to escape. Monica reveals that she has been kidnapped by the monastery's librarianTomas, prompting the church to attempt to capture him. While they attempt to capture him, Tomas shapeshifts into Solon, and disappears. Shez witnesses this, which makes them wonder about their own mysterious powers.

Claude receives notice of an attempted invasion byAlmyra, and the Golden Deer are dispatched to Fódlan's Locket to assist in fending off the invasion. After the battle,Rhea decides to close the officer's academy due to the political struggles throughout the nations of Fódlan, and Shez begins to work for the alliance.

Three years later, Edelgard declares war on the Church of Seriros, and begins to march on the Leicester Alliance as well.Count Gloucester pretends to defect to the empire, but his betrayal is ultimately revealed to have been a scheme byClaude. After successfully fending off the empire's invasion, the alliance army decides to go on the offensive and launch an attack on the empire before being forced to retreat due to another Almyran invasion. Claude manages to convince Almyran forces to aid the alliance in the battle, and princeShahid is ultimately killed in battle.

Claude decides to make a pact with Edelgard, ending the war with the empire and prompting him to assist it in its struggle against the kingdom. Claude attempts to minimize casualties on his side, ultimately costing the imperial generalRandolph his life. Furious at the news of her brother's death, his sisterFleche hires Jeralt's mercenaries in an attempt to kill Claude in retaliation. Depending on the player's actions during the following battle, they can either recruit them to their cause or defeat and kill Jeralt. The alliance army marches further into the kingdom and makes it to the kingdom capital of Fhirdiad before being forced to retreat due to an attack on alliance territory bythose who slither in the dark. The knights of Seiros and the kingdom army attempt to retake Garreg Mach Monastery, and the alliance army moves to assist the imperial army in fending them off. Rhea escapes, and Claude chases her to defeat her once and for all.

If Byleth and Jeralt were recruited, Shez attacks Byleth while chasing Rhea. While Claude and his army attempt to intervene, he and the other house leaders as well as Shez are trapped in Zahras by Epimenides. They manage to escape by killing Epimenides and Arval along with him. If Byleth and Jeralt were not recruited, Byleth appears after Rhea and Dimitri were defeated, and is ultimately slain by Shez.

The alliance army clashes with the knights of Seiros at the Tailtean plains, ultimately forcingSeteth andFlayn to retreat and killingRhea.

Gameplay

Like its predecessor, the game features hack and slash gameplay of a single character against many enemy units at once in real time, as is typical of theDynasty Warriors series. Goals include defeating a certain number of enemies, defeating enemy commanders, or seizing certain strongholds. Similar toWarriors, it features several mechanics inspired by theFire Emblem series, especiallyFire Emblem: Three Houses.

Progression

Most chapters consist of multiple side quests and a main quest. Side quests need to be completed to accesssurvey spots and adjacent territories on the war map. These territories can in turn contain other side quests, or a main quest. Once a chapter's main quest has been completed, the chapter is completed and a new chapter will begin, rendering the previous chapter's side missions and survey spots inaccessible. Additionally, the player can choose to explore thebase camp before and in between side quests.

Certain chapters do not feature any side quests, and instead only allow the player to explore the base camp and to access the chapter's main mission. Select chapters only consist of a single main mission, and will not allow the player to access the base camp at all.

Base Camp

Shez exploring thebase camp.
Main article:Base Camp

The base camp acts as the game's hub for the majority of the campaign. It can be visited between quests to purchase new items, acquire newclasses, or to buildsupport between allied units through various activities. The player can freely explore the camp and interact with units they have recruited. However, activities at the base camp are limited through training and activity points; if the player has used all their points, they cannot use the corresponding activities. Training and activity points restore between chapters.

Camp facilities can be upgraded throughout the game, which allows the player to access additional features. Through upgrading facilities, the camp itself can also be leveled up, which increases the number of available activity and training points per chapter.

War Map

The war map as it appears duringChapter 5Golden Wildfire.
Main article:Base Camp#War Map

The war map is accessed through the base camp, and allows the player to access the various quests. Additionally, once a quest has been completed, the player gains access tosurvey spots that can be visited to receive various rewards, such as items, support points, or additionalstrategies.

Battle preparations

Similar to the mainFire Emblem series, each battle begins with a preparations phase. During battle preparations, the player can select and rearrange their units, change their classes, abilities, or equipment, and view a map of the quest. Certain quests restrict the units the player can deploy by requiring them to be in specific classes, by only allowing units of a specific gender, or by requiring certain units.

The player can also view the quest's completion requirements (though they may change throughout the battle), and its S Rank requirements.

Strategies

Main article:Strategy

During most main quests throughout the game, the player can choose between multiple strategies to be used throughout the battle. Certain strategies activate automatically, while others need to be activated manually. While some strategies are available by default, others need to be unlocked through visiting certainsurvey spots during the corresponding chapter. Strategies can have various effects, such as to add additional allied units to the battle or to change certain aspects of the battlefield. Additionally, the use of certain strategies is one of the most common ways to recruit additional characters throughout the game.

Strategies require a certain amount of strategy resources to be used. The specific amount required varies based on the strategy. The player obtains additional strategies by completing side quests throughout the corresponding chapter. Certain strategies also require specific units to be deployed. The player is notified of this when selecting the strategy, and will receive an additional warning upon attempting to start the quest without the required characters.

Combat

During battle, the player usually has access to multiple different characters at the same time, and can freely switch between characters by pressing the corresponding button. Most battles allow the player to deploy up to four different units at the same time. Units who are not directly controlled by the player can be given orders such as to attack a specific enemy or enemy position, or to defend a certain unit or location. Most main quests additionally allow them to deploy up to four additional units that can be assigned to the main units asadjutants or be given orders individually, but cannot be controlled manually.

There are two different types of attacks inWarriors: Three Hopes: regular attacks and strong attacks. Characters can perform combos of regular attacks, and finish them off by using a strong attack. By default, regular attacks are performed with the Y button, while strong attacks are performed with the X&nbp;button. Strong attacks can often have additional properties, such as triggering a specificelement; regular attacks typically do not have such effects. Each class also has access to its own class move that can be triggered by pressing the strong attack button outside a combo. Class moves can often be charged up to gain additional power or range.

Strong attacks are denoted as follows in-game:

Button pressesName
XStrong I
Y, XStrong II
Y, Y, XStrong III
Y, Y, Y, XStrong IV
Y, Y, Y, Y, XStrong V
Y, Y, Y, Y, Y, XStrong VI

However, units are not able to perform all strong attacks from the start; instead, they unlock new combos when obtaining higherweapon ranks.

Attacking enemies can reveal astun gauge that is visible for a limited amount of time. Once this stun gauge is depleted, the player can perform aCritical Rush that deals a large amount of damage to its target and nearby enemies. Additionally, each unit has their own Awakening and Warrior gauges that, when filled, allow them to performWarrior Specials andAwakenings, respectively.

Enemy behavior

There are two different types of enemies inWarriors: Three Hopes:commander units and their accompanying troops. Commanders attack player units more frequently and are capable of usingcombat arts, while accompanying troops attack less frequently, particularly on lower difficulties. Enemies can either defend a certain position or charge toward the player's strongholds or allied units.

Monsters

Monster enemies reappear inWarriors: Three Hopes. Similar toThree Houses, they have multiple health bars that need to be depleted to defeat the monster. Each monster has four different stun gauges that can be depleted by attacking the monster with a specific weapon type orelement. Once a stun gauge has been depleted, the player can launch a critical rush that depletes the remainder of the monster's current health bar. Additionally, once a monster'sHP drops to 1 on their last health bar, the player can perform a critical rush that is required in order to defeat the monster.

Battlefield structure

On each battlefield, there are various strongholds, each with its own stronghold captain. When a unit is inside of an allied stronghold, they periodically regenerate HP. Strongholds can be captured by defeating their stronghold captain. Additionally, bases serve as a spawn point for reinforcements. Certain strongholds are tied toBallistae orFire Orbs that periodically fire at enemy units until the corresponding stronghold has been seized.

Many battlefields feature devices that can be used to disable certain hazards or to open up new paths by opening gates or lowering draw bridges. Certain missions feature hazardous terrain such as lava that periodically damage units as long as they are standing on it.

Missions

Each battle consists of various sub-missions that are divided into two separate categories: main missions and side missions. Side missions are optional missions that can reward the player with additionalgold or cause specific changes to the current battle, while main missions are typically required to progress in the mission. Most main missions trigger aGame Over when they are failed. Once the player has completed all main missions during a battle, the battle is completed.

Additional missions of both types can begin as the battle progresses, and typically coincide with the appearance of enemy or allied reinforcements or structural changes to the battlefield.

Adjutants

Units can be assigned to each other asadjutants through a certain button combination (R+A by default) or by ordering a unit to become another unit's adjutant from the commands menu. Adjutants can provide the lead unit stat bonuses, apply specificabilities, and will build up two separate gauges that, once full, can make them launch an attack of their own or shield the lead unit from damage, respectively. Adjutants also participate in the lead unit'sWarrior Specials by performing their own special before the lead unit's special is performed.

Recovery items

Recovery items are occasionally dropped by enemies, or can be obtained from pots of the same color. Each color corresponds to a certain effect:

Movesets

A unit's moveset is dictated by their class. Certain classes share their movesets with each other, such as theSwordmaster andMortal Savant classes. Mounted classes have the ability todismount to access a second moveset; they can remount at any time.

Unit attributes

Experience and level ups

Similar to the mainFire Emblem series, units gainexperience by defeating enemies and canlevel up by accumulating enough experience, increasing their stats. Unlike the mainFire Emblem series, a unit's basic stat gains are not randomized upon leveling up; they instead receive fixed stat gains for each level-up. However, each class adds its own modifiers to a unit's level ups, and stat gains through a unit's class are randomized using the class'sgrowth rates.

As the gameplay inWarriors: Three Hopes differs from the main series, certain stats have different functions:

StatEffect
HPA unit's HP is depleted upon taking damage. If a unit's HP reaches 0, they will retreat or die, depending on the chosen mode.
StrengthIncreases damage dealt by physical attacks.
MagicIncreases damage dealt by magical attacks.
DexterityIncreases a unit's critical rate and the damage dealt bycritical rushes.
SpeedIncreases the duration of a unit'sAwakened state and reduces the cooldown ofcombat arts andmagic.
LuckIncreases the drop rates for recovery items.
DefenseReduces physical damage taken by a unit.
ResistanceReduces magical damage taken by a unit.
CharmReduces the depletion rate ofbattalions assigned to a unit.
MovementDetermines a unit's movement speed.

Classes

Main article:List of classes inFire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

InWarriors: Three Hopes, units can change into various different classes. Each unit has the basicMyrmidon,Soldier,Fighter, andMonk classes unlocked by default, and can change into higher-tier classes upon achieving mastery of the previous class. Units can freely change between all classes they have unlocked. Certain units, such asShez orEdelgard, can unlock special classes throughout the game that only they have access to.

Each unit has a certain class path they receive additional class experience in. Additionally, each unit can wear their unique outfit in specific classes by default, and has a uniqueWarrior Special in specific classes.

A unit's class dictates their moveset and unit type, provides them access to specific class abilities, and modifies their stats and growth rates. Classes also determine which weapon a unit can wield; with the exception of the Fighter class, each class can only wield a single weapon type.

Abilities

Main article:List of abilities inFire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

Each unit has their own set of abilities. Abilities are divided into three major groups: signature abilities', class abilities, and learned abilities. Units can receive an additional ability through deployingbattalions.

Signature Abilities

Each unit has three different signature abilities: a unique action ability, a unique support ability, and a unique tactical ability. Similar to personal skills from the mainFire Emblem series, these abilities are unique to each character. A unit's unique tactical ability typically grants a unit access to a specific ability on command (ZR by default) with a cooldown, or grants them an additional benefit upon reaching a certain number of consecutive hits. Unique support abilities usually provide a unit with passive benefits such as an increasedcritical rate on specific attacks. A unit's unique tactical ability is activated if they are given a specific command from the orders menu.

A unit's unique action ability can be transferred onto other units by equipping specificaccessories. Additionally, while unique tactical abilities are unique in name, many share their effects with each other.

Enemy units never have signature abilities, even if they would have ones under player control.

Class abilities

Similar toThree Houses, each class has its own set of innate abilities that cannot be transferred to other classes. Each class possesses a specific weapon buster ability, and classes of higher tiers have access to up to three additional abilities. Enemy units have all class abilities associated with their class.

Learned Abilities

Units can learn additional abilities by reaching specific mastery levels in specific classes. The abilities a unit learns are determined by the unit themself, and different units learn different abilities from the same classes. Units can initially equip up to four abilities, and the number of available slots can be expanded up to ten. Abilities that would not provide a benefit outside of specific classes cannot be equipped outside of those classes. Enemy units only rarely have access to learned abilities.

Battalions

Each battalion is equipped with a single ability that provides a unit with a higher advantage over a specific weapon or unit type. These abilities are lost for the remainder of the battle if the battalion's endurance is depleted.

Combat arts and magic

In addition to abilities, units learn combat arts and magic by achieving mastery in specific classes. Combat arts and magic are strong attacks that encompasses a large area on the battlefield; they can be used by pressing certain button combinations (R+X and R+Y by default). However, each combat art and spell has a cooldown and costs a certain amount of weapondurability. If a unit's weapon does not have enough durability, combat arts or spells cannot be used.

Combat arts and spells can be leveled up until level 3 by using them multiple times. Higher levels of combat arts and spells consume less weapon durability and have shorter cooldown times.

Heroes' Relics grant units who bear the matchingcrest access to an additional combat art or spell that can only be used with that specific weapon. If a unit unequips a Heroes' Relic or the matching crest (if they got it through a Crest sign), they will no longer be able to use that combat art or spell, but will retain all experience they gained from using it. Spells granted by Heroes' Relics are not specific to that relic, and will overlap with that spell if it was learned by the wielder through other means. Units can also teach combat arts and spells to each other throughpeer training if they have achieved at least a C support with each other.

Crests

Main article:Crests

Similar toThree Houses, certain units have crests that grant them a chance to receive an additional effect when performing specific actions. Like inThree Houses, wielding a Heroes' Relic without a crest will periodically damage the user. ThroughNew Game+, the player can obtain Crest Signs to grant weaker versions of a crest to units who do not naturally bear that crest.

Characters

Main article:List of characters inFire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

Unlike the previousWarriors title,Warriors: Three Hopes solely features characters from one game,Three Houses, in its roster. All of the originalThree Houses student roster are playable, as well as many non-students. Four characters who were not playable inThree Houses are playable in the main story ofWarriors: Three Hopes:Monica,Rodrigue,Holst, andJeralt. The Ashen Wolves DLC house also appear as playable characters. Certain other characters who are playable inThree Houses are not playable inWarriors: Three HopesCyril,Alois,Hanneman,Gilbert, andAnna (though she was DLC only inThree Houses)—but do appear as NPCs throughout the game's events.Warriors: Three Hopes also features a new playable character—Shez—who appears as theavatar and protagonist.Byleth appears as well, initially in an antagonistic role. The player can select the genders of both Shez and Byleth at the start of the game.

Four additional units can be unlocked throughNew Game+:Rhea,Sothis,Arval, and theGatekeeper.

Chapters

Main article:List of chapters inFire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

Warriors: Three Hopes is divided into three different routes: Scarlet Blaze, Azure Gleam, and Golden Wildfire. While the first three chapters are shared between all routes, the subsequent chapters are different from each other. Each route consists of thirteen additional chapters, with two extra chapters that are unlocked by recruiting Byleth.Paralogues appear in a similar way toThree Houses, with each paralogue focusing on a certain set of units that are required to be used during that paralogue.

Supports

Main article:List of supports inFire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

Warriors: Three Hopes features the traditional C, B, and A support levels. However, unlike in otherFire Emblem games, not every support level has asupport conversation attached to it; e.g. Dimitri has conversations with Mercedes at their C and A supports, and with Rodrigue at their B and A supports. Every unit is theoretically able to achieve at least a C support with every other unit, though in practice,Edelgard,Dimitri, andClaude cannot support with each other due to gameplay restrictions.

Development

Work onWarriors: Three Hopes began shortly after the development ofThree Houses concluded. Originally titledFire Emblem Warriors 2, it was decided to focus on the world ofThree Houses due to the positive reception and due to Koei Tecmo's involvement in its development. Early into the game's development, it was decided to make Byleth, the previous game's protagonist, into an antagonist to put a twist on the previous game's concept. It was decided to have a two-year timeskip instead ofThree Houses' five year skip, and new character designs were created to fill in the gap. Due to the game's greater focus on the war aspect, characters who were previously unseen, such asHolst andCount Bergliez, would make an appearance.[1]
