Vulnerary
| ||||
|
TheVulnerary (Japanese:傷薬Ointment) is a basic and common healingitem which first appearedFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, and is available in all subsequent games exceptFire Emblem Gaiden and its remakeEchoes: Shadows of Valentia, as well asGenealogy of the Holy War. When used, Vulneraries heal injured units by a relatively small amount, usually tenhit points of damage; this makes them more effective earlier in the game, before units have had an opportunity tolevel up and achieve higher amounts of maximum HP. The exceptions to this is the Vulneraries ofThracia 776, which instead restore all HP to a unit, acting more like theElixir of other games, and the Vulneraries ofRadiant Dawn, which restore 20 HP and act more like theConcoctions of later games, while the game's 10 HP healing item is instead theHerb.
Fairly cheap and with at least three uses, Vulneraries are valuable assets at the beginning of the game, when the player usually does not have access to a healer. In most games, many playable units will also already be carrying a Vulnerary in theirinventory whenthey join the player's party, making Vulneraries even more easily accessible.

Trivia
- InThe Sacred Stones, there are two unused vulneraries with their icons shaped as musical notes. It`s unknown what these two vulneraries were intended to be used for as they have no functionality programmed.
- In the Japanese version ofShadow Dragon, there are two images in the in-game guide showing a five-use Vulnerary. In the actual game, including the Japanese version, each Vulnerary can be used only up to three times. However, Vulneraries do have five uses apiece inShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light.

| English | Vulnerary | As a noun, refers to a medicine for treating flesh wounds. It is derived from the Latinvulnus, "wound", the same origin as the modern English word "vulnerable". |
| Japanese | 傷薬 | Ointment (specifically ointment for treating wounds); suggests that vulneraries are applied to the wound as ointment rather than being drunk as potions, as its names in the French and Spanish translations imply. Written in hiragana asきずぐすり prior toPath of Radiance, and in theNintendo DS games. |
