Vortex (Japanese:疾風の刀Gale Blade) is a combatskill which is exclusive toFire Emblem: Path of Radiance. It is themastery skill of theravenlaguz, and is effectively exclusive to the only playable raven,Naesala. It gives its users the ability to cast awind spell in order to attack foes at indirect range. Although the attack is much weaker than a raven's standardBeak attack as a result of their lowmagic stat, it still has use as an improvement to their attackingrange, and also offers aneffective bonus over enemy fliers. However, as it requires being activated by command when moving the user, Vortex cannot be used to counterattack opponents at indirect range during the enemy phase.

The spell cast by the Vortex skill, also called Vortex, is a modified version of the standardElwind tome which is accessible only through the skill. Its stats and behavior are identical to the regular Elwind, aside from its lack ofweapon level requirement, limiteddurability, andworth. It is exclusive to users of the Vortex skill and cannot otherwise be accessed.

Fire Emblem Cipher

Vortex is present as a skill on one card inFire Emblem Cipher:B03-044R King of Kilvas, Naesala. It is a manual-activation skill which, for a cost of flipping 1 bond card, modifies Naesala's weapon type from fang to tome, increases their range to 1-2, and adds the common "Anti-Fliers" skill to Naesala to temporarily give him an effective bonus of +30 to his attack power when fighting flying-type cards. All of these effects last until the end of the turn.

Trivia

• The Vortex skill's help text is slightly misleading. It incorrectly implies the Vortex tome to be a variant ofWind as opposed to the variant of Elwind it actually is.
• While Vortex can be learned as a mastery skill by using an Occult scroll, doing so is effectively useless as the only playable raven (Naesala) already has the skill when recruited.
• Radiant Dawn hasunused elements which suggest that Vortex was planned to re-appear in it. In the finished game, it is effectively replaced by the similarMaelstrom skill, which has a similar Japanese name to Vortex and which Naesala also already possesses when recruited.
