| “ | Is the lady intrigued? Of course you are—it's only natural. I am myth and legend! I am he who strides large across history's greatest stage! The man who puts the "arch" in "archer"! | ” | — Virion, toSully |

Virion (Japanese:ヴィオールViaur) is a character inFire Emblem Awakening.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
Virion debuts inChapter 1, immediately afterSully, and introduces himself as "the man who put the 'arch' in 'archer.'" He then aidsChrom and his allies in their skirmish against theRisen.
After his initial recruitment, Virion once more holds relevance to the story inChapter 12. Two years after the end of the war withGangrel, Virion goes toRegna Ferox to warn Chrom of an oncoming threat:Walhart the Conqueror. Alongside his vassalCherche, Virion reveals his true identity as the Duke of Rosanne, a duchy in Valm that had been overtaken by Walhart and his cavalry. Having fled from his homeland, he asks for Chrom's aid in defeating Walhart.
After the defeat ofGrima, the epilogue states that Virion returns to the war torn Rosanne, only to be ostracized and ridiculed for his perceived cowardice in their time of need. Nevertheless, Virion devotes the rest of his life to serving his people and, if he is married, eventually earns back their favor.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Virion is a level 2Archer starting in Chapter 1 ofAwakening on turn 2. His bases aren't bad for his join time, with HP, strength, speed, luck, and defense being okay, his skill amazing stacking with theSkill +2 skill, and atrocious magic and resistance. His growths are pretty great, aside from magic, defense, and resistance, and maybe luck. He starts with a base D in bows, letting him use iron weapons at base, and anElixir allowing a full heal three times. At level 10, he getsPrescience, which boosts hit and avoid when he initiates combat.
While he seems a pretty lackluster character on Lunatic, he is in reality, great, since bows allow him to safely chip at two-range, and he has great reclass and promotion options. In his starting class, he can promote toSniper orBow Knight. Sniper gives more magic, skill, defense, and resistance, and gives a slight increase to his defense growth. For skills,Hit Rate +20 gives a great permanent boost to hit, andBowfaire gives an extra five damage with bows, which is immensely useful if his final class will either be Sniper or Bow Knight. Bow Knight gives more HP, strength, speed, and movement for promotion bonuses, and access to swords for a 1-range option. For growths, it gives increases to HP, strength, and speed, but has decreases to skill and defense. For skills,Rally Skill is a great supportive skill to help units that might have shaky hit rates, andBowbreaker is a broken skill, giving an extra fifty hit and avoid against bows.
For the first reclass option,Wyvern Rider is great for its seven unimpeded movement. It gives an increase to his strength growth, but a reduction to his skill growth.Strength +2 is a neat skill for when he is building weapon ranks with weaker weapons, andTantivy is fine until the player has access to better skills. This class can promote toWyvern Lord orGriffon Rider. Wyvern Lord gets more HP, strength, defense, retains the same growths as Wyvern Rider, and gets access to the second best weapon type of lances. For skills,Quick Burn is not amazing, unless the player uses low turn count strategies to make the most of it, andSwordbreaker is an awesome skill that gives an extra fifty hit and avoid against swords. Griffon Rider, on the other hand, supplies more skill and speed, and for growths increases strength and speed, but reduces skill and defense. For skills, Griffon Rider givesDeliverer for an extra two movement when paired up, andLancebreaker for a massive boost to hit and avoid when fighting lances.
On the surface,Mage seems like a sub-par reclass option with his base 30% magic growth, but the growth increases to a decent 50% when reclassed. Mage gets the skillMagic +2 to help him use tomes until he can get more magic, andFocus gives an extra ten crit when there are no allies nearby. Mage decreases growths to HP, strength, skill, and defense, but increases magic, speed, and resistance. For promotions,Sage keeps Mage's growths, gives more magic and speed for promotion bonuses, and gets access to staves for a great supportive tool.Dark Knight gives better promotion bonuses aside from magic and speed, and gives access to swords, which make use of his higher strength stat. On the topic of skills, Sage givesRally Magic for a supportive skill, andTomefaire, which is worthless if Virion does not remain in either Sage or Dark Knight as his final class. Dark Knight givesSlow Burn for a gradual increase to hit and avoid for the rest of the map, andLifetaker, which can be great with Virion's durability issues.
As a father, Virion mainly passes growths in strength, skill, and speed. To start, marryingNowi is mostly a waste due to Nowi having the same reclass options, and Archer not being needed.Miriel andMaribelle would more appreciate magical fathers unless the player wantsLaurent orBrady to be a physical magical hybrid. Panne is fine since she has no way of givingYarneGaleforce. However, overall, Virion's best utility is passing Wyvern Rider and Archer for access to three breaker skills from Bow Knight, Wyvern Lord, and Griffon Rider respectively.

Fire Emblem Heroes
Role
Virion is one of the characters available to be summoned by players from the game's initial launch, and is also the second of twelve characters that are part of the game'sHero Battle rotation. He was first made available via Hero Battle at 7:00 AM UTC on February 3, 2017 through 6:59 AM UTC on February 4, 2017, and his Hero Battle has been available during the same time period every twelve days thereafter. Only one variation of Virion is currently available inHeroes, based on hisAwakening incarnation. His Mirage form as depicted inTokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE makes an appearance withEleonora.
Virion is one of the player's initial units inFire Emblem Heroes; prior to version 2.5, he joined at the beginning of the game'ssecond preface map. WhenAnna andKiran were attacked byEmblian soldiers, Kiran took theBreidablik in hand andsummoned Virion, who fought alongside Anna to ward off the Emblians. Once the Preface ended, this two-star Virion could be used like any other non-unique Hero; the player could choose to raise him, merge him with another version of Virion, or send him home to earnHero Feathers. Version 2.5 saw this role assumed by a four-starTakumi instead, but players first starting from that version onward still get Virion as one of four free units apart from the main characters given to new players of the game; 2.5-onward new players get their free Virion, now as a four-star unit, after returning to the castle after completing the Preface.

Personality
When Virion first appears in the story, he quickly asserts himself as a boastful romantic, describing himself with great praise while immediately proposing to Sully. Virion's boasts are entirely founded, however, when it comes to his skills in archery. During his supports withPanne, Virion matched her in battle "trophy for trophy." In his supports with Sully, he clarifies that while he doesn't partake in unnecessary duels, he has no issue with fighting for the sake of innocent lives. However, while he is masterful at archery, Virion is stated to be prone to ambush, which is likely a reference to the limited range of archers in Awakening.
The circumstances surrounding Virion's fleeing fromRosanne are elaborated on in his supports with Panne. When speaking with Chrom about the situation in Valm after Gangrel's defeat, it is implied that he fled due to cowardice, and Panne mentions that his cravenness is well known. However, this could not be further from the truth.
Virion cares deeply about the lives of innocents, and his subjects in particular. He explained to Panne that he knew that Walhart would easily decimate his countrymen had they fought him. At the same time, Virion was well loved by the citizens of Rosanne, so when word got out that he was going to offer himself to Walhart to spare their lives, they defied him and swore to protect him.
Knowing that countless lives would be lost had they fought for him, Virion fled in order to decrease morale. By making himself seem cowardly, he'd lose the respect of his subjects and give them less of a reason to fight a losing battle against the Valmese army. In the meantime, he'd find an army (in this case, Chrom and his Shepherds) to fight back the Valmese and save his homeland. The epilogue showcases Virion's dedication to his people, as he spends the rest of his life serving them even after they had ostracized him upon his return.
In his supports withMaribelle, he shows just how much his integrity means to him. When she accuses him of being dishonest, he doesn't eat for days and spends many hours thinking over his actions with immense grief, as if he'd besmirched his own nobility.
Virion, among other things, is also incredibly cunning. In his supports withRobin, he shows that he has an eye for tactics and strategy by repeatedly beating Robin at a strategy board game. However, he remarks that his own tactics would never work on an actual battlefield, as they rely greatly on sacrificing pawns, while Robin refused to sacrifice a single one, even in a fictional setting. In his supports withFrederick, there comes a point where a debt collector donates a large sum of money to the Shepherds in order to secure Virion's survival, with Frederick remarking about how baffling it is that his debt was so exorbitant that it tied the debt collector's welfare to Virion's.
In addition, Virion is a lover of the arts. He thinks of himself as a poet, while describing pleasant things as being poetry. Furthermore, his supports withOlivia reveal he's a talented dancer, while his supports withTharja show that he is also a skilled chef.

Virion, Archest Archer (single ending)
Virion returned home to Rosanne, where he was labeled a traitor and a coward, or else ignored entirely. He never battled these claims, but history shows he gave the rest of his life to the people.
Virion, Archest Archer & Robin, High Deliverer
Many wrote of Robin's legendary exploits, but accounts of her origins and character varied. Scholars, poets, and bards agreed on one thing alone—she loved her husband, Virion, above all else.
Virion, Archest Archer & Lissa, Sprightly Cleric

Virion, Archest Archer & Sully, Crimson Knight
Virion returned home to Rosanne, where he was labeled a traitor and a coward, or else ignored entirely. But in time he was forgiven, largely thanks to the bold (and slightly terrifying) nature of his wife, Sully.
Virion, Archest Archer & Miriel, Rapier Intellect
Virion returned home to Rosanne, where he was labeled a traitor and a coward, or else ignored entirely. But Miriel's discoveries improved their quality of life, and they soon came to love him once more.
Virion, Archest Archer & Maribelle, Dire Damsel

Virion, Archest Archer & Nowi, Eternal Youth
Virion returned home to Rosanne, where he was labeled a traitor and a coward, or else ignored entirely. Thankfully, his wife Nowi's flair for drama was entertaining enough to keep the mob's pitchforks at bay.
Virion, Archest Archer & Tharja, Grim Stalker
Virion returned home to Rosanne, where he was labeled a traitor and a coward, or else ignored entirely. But a few well-placed hexes from his wife, Tharja, eventually brought the populace to their senses.

Virion returned home to Rosanne, where he was labeled a traitor and a coward, or else ignored entirely. But Cherche's smarts and kindness eventually brought her husband back into good standing.
