Valbar (Japanese:バルボValbo) is a playable character inFire Emblem Gaiden. He is aknight that seeks revenge onBarth for the death of his family.

Role

Valbar is the firstknight recruited onCelica's route. He throws himself into battle against the pirates inhabiting the region after the death of his family and having nothing else to lose.^[1] He and his friendLeon hireKamui to get their revenge. If he survives the battle he joins Celica in gratitude.

Analysis

Valbar is a knight that joins in act 2, he has high bases and growths in HP, strength and defense, but low or mediocre ones in every other area. His 4 movement makes it hard for him to keep up with the pegasus knights and dread fighters in Celica's difficult terrain-filled maps. Unlike magic users, Valbar doesn't have ways to extend his range and will likely see little combat in the later chapters.

Valbar does have a niche as a defensive unit in Celica's army when he joins since Celica's squad is on the less durable side overall. He is useful for the next four maps, being able to body block Revenants inThird Pirate Raid, he can take hits from the dangerous Mercenaries ofFourth Pirate Raid, can bait out and deal heavy damage to the Arcanists ofFifth Pirate Raid, and choke a bridge inZofian Coast Battle. In the desert, he will struggle to keep up, but he can still help by learningShove in previous maps. He also has a valuable role inAttack on Grieth's Citadel for taking on the Myrmidon in the bottom-right that is both fairly dangerous and very out of the way for other units. He can also tank Deen and his companions well if his map is played.

With the use of the pitchfork DLC, Valbar can reclass into a more useful class such as mercenary, but without it Valbar will likely be a far larger liability than anything else as a combat unit beyond the desert, though he will retain some use thanks to Shove.

Valbar: Open and Honest
Here's Valbar! He's in there somewhere beneath all that armor, anyway. Valbar used to be a soldier in the Zofian army, but when he lost his family to an attack by pirates, he left to avenge them.	During his battle against the pirates, Valbar found himself completely surrounded and, for a moment, he was at the mercy of his foes. But then along came Celica and her allies, who were out fighting the Duma Faithful!	She had saved his life, and Valbar couldn't let this debt go unpaid. He immediately joined Celica, bravely shielding her and her allies from danger!	A pretty straightforward story, isn't it? Or so you'd think… But there's a famous painting from another world showing Celica, Alm, and Valbar striking a valiant pose together. At least, I think it's them! He's also rumored to feature in a tale of revolution in a realm quite different from the Valentia I know of… I wish I knew more about all of this!
