Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Vaike starts out as a level 3Fighter in Chapter 2 ofAwakening. He comes in with some solid bases and growths, but has a 0 in resistance, and a 10% growth. His mods are okay, as his -2 in magic will rarely be important, while his -2 in resistance and -1 in luck is not as great. He comes with nothing in his inventory, meaning he cannot fight for the first turn of the map. WhenMiriel shows up on turn 2, she comes with anIron Axe, meaning only then Vaike can begin fighting. He also starts with Fighter's first skill ofHP +5, which gives him some extra bulk. At level 10, he unlocksZeal, which gives a small +5 to his crit rate. His D in axes is great for his join time, as he can immediately use iron weapons, and is that bit closer to steel and killer weapons.
Fighter comes in with some great promotion choices, and skill access. His main promotion ofWarrior gives more points of HP and strength, and gives him access to bows for a more reliable, accurate, and harder hitting ranged option than the three ranged axes. Warrior also retains his base Fighter growths. For skills,Rally Strength is one of the better rally skills to help units deal more damage, andCounter deals all damage taken back to the foe with no reductions. His other promotion ofHero supplies more magic, skill, speed, and defense, and gains swords for another accurate weapon type. Hero also reduces his strength growth, but increases his skill and speed growths.Sol can be an okay skill to heal damage, and his decent skill makes procing much easier.Axebreaker is a must grab skill, since it gives a huge boost of fifty to both hit and avoid when fighting axes, no matter what weapon type Vaike is using.
His first reclass option ofThief is not the greatest, but has access to some nice utility skills if the player wishes. Thief itself increases his magic, skill, and speed growths, and reduces his HP, strength, and defense growths.Locktouch is nice to freely open chests and doors, andMovement +1 is probably the best skill the Thief class tree has to offer. Moving on to promotion choices,Assassin gives more HP, strength, skill, speed, and defense, and gains access to bows for a great ranged option compared to the only ranged sword, theLevin Sword. The Levin Sword also deals damage of Vaike's poor magic stat, making bows even more important. Assassin also increases his HP, strength, and skill growths, and only reduces his magic growth.Lethality is an unreliable skill since it has an incredibly low proc rate even with a high amount of skill, andPass gives Vaike the ability to move past enemy occupied squares. The other promotion ofTrickster is much worse, as it trades useful bow access for worse staff access, and his low magic makes staves quite poor. Trickster gives more points of magic and resistance. It also increases his magic and resistance growths, and further reduces his strength growth.Lucky 7 is nothing too special, only giving some extra hit and avoid for the first seven turns of battle.Acrobat is another skill worth considering, since it allows Vaike to move on unfavorable terrain without taking a movement penalty, but the overall grind it takes to get there may discourage use.
Vaike's second reclass set ofBarbarian is incredibly important for axe users, as this will be discussed later. Barbarian increases his HP and speed growths, and reduces his skill and defense growths. At level 1, Barbarian gives the skillDespoil for a chance to gain some extra gold, and at level 10 givesGamble, which reduces hit, but gives some extra crit in exchange. The main draw to this class is its promotion ofBerserker, which gives the all important skill ofAxefaire, which gives some extra damage with axes. Berserker also give the skill ofWrath, which gives an extra twenty crit when at half health. On other notes, Berserker give more points of HP, strength, and speed when promoting from Barbarian, and retains Barbarian's growths. Barbarian can also promote to Warrior, which gives more points of skill, defense, and resistance, and gains bow access.
Vaike is mostly a father for male children, as he gives them the Barbarian class tree, and female children gain access toMercenary andKnight. On the growth side, he passes good increases to a child's HP, strength, skill, and defense growths.Lissa can be an okay option for a superpowered HeroOwain, combiningSwordfaire fromSwordmaster, which is in Owain's base kit, and Axefaire from Vaike passing Barbarian, to power up both weapon types.Cherche is another decent option sinceGerome would greatly appreciate Axefaire. MarryingSully,Nowi, andTharja deprives their children the covetedGaleforce skill, making these pairings suboptimal, but they can still be good if the player does not care to maximize Galeforce users. If the player is using female Robin, one of these three will miss out on Galeforce no matter what; of the three, Nowi's daughterNah appreciates Vaike's stat spread and access to both Axefaire andGeneral. From a growth standpoint, marryingOlivia seems like a good choice on the surface, butInigo already has the Barbarian class tree, Fighter promotions, and Assassin in his base kits. The only new classes Inigo gets is Fighter, Thief, and Trickster, which all are not the greatest since their skills are mostly unnecessary since Inigo has all he really needs in his base kits, and has access to Galeforce from Olivia.

Personality
Vaike is an overconfident fighter who constantly refers to himself in the third person, using "The Vaike" and his alias "Teach". Vaike is also shown to make rash decisions and tends to lose his weapons often, and can be a little slow to recognize subtle jabs at him. He sees Chrom as a rival and student, challenging him any chance he can get, even if it is in the midst of a battle. In fact, Vaike tends to take the rest of his allies under his wing, wanting to train them to their full potential. Because of this, his allies have called his headstrong behavior commendable and he does truly care for his friends, even if he has a strange way of showing it.
