Genealogy of the Holy War

Tyrfing (Japanese:ティルフィングTyrhung), often referred to in dialogue as thesacred sword Tyrfing (Japanese:聖剣ティルフィングholy sword Tyrhung), is a legendarysword introduced inFire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. It is the holy weapon once wielded byBaldr of theTwelve Crusaders, bestowed upon him at theMiracle of Dahna after his blood pact with a dragon. The blade is the property of Baldr's descendants, the heirs ofGrannvale's HouseChalphy, and can only be wielded by those in possession of major BaldrHoly Blood.

History

Bestowed uponBaldr by an unidentified dragon at theMiracle of Dahna, Tyrfing was used by Baldr in theHoly War to put an end toLoptous and hisempire alongside the rest of the12 Crusaders. Following the downfall of the Loptrian Empire, Baldr foundedChalphy inGrannvale, and the sword was passed down through each succeeding Duke of the duchy. InGrann 757, at the onset of Grannvale's war withIsaach, the then duke of Chalphy,Byron, took the blade with him and used it in the war. It was broken after his betrayal byReptor andLombard; though badly wounded, Byron nonetheless eluded capture to bring the weapon's remains to his sonSigurd, dying after handing it over. Sigurd had the remains repaired, then used the blade in his confrontation with Lombard, Reptor andAndrey. After Sigurd's death in theBattle of Belhalla, his killer LordArvis took possession of Tyrfing, where it remained unused for seventeen years.

AsSeliph's liberation army made its way through theMiletos district, Arvis arrived at Chalphy and entrusted the blade to its BishopPalmarch, encouraging him to flee with children captured by the empire. Seliph's army soon rescued Palmarch's group as they fled to the north, and Palmarch passed Tyrfing on to Seliph, who then used it in the final confrontation with the Grannvale Empire and its PrinceJulius.

Fire Emblem Cipher

Tyrfing is present as two different skills on two cards inFire Emblem Cipher:

  • Sigurd (B06-001SR The Warrior of Light's Heir) possessesSacred Sword Tyrfing, which enhances his power if his player currently has at least eight bond cards. If so, Sigurd gains a 10-point boost to his attack power, and if he attacks and defeats the opponent's lord, two of the opponent's orbs are destroyed instead of one.
  • Seliph (B08-051SR Savior of Light) possessesRadiant Tyrfing, which gives a boost of 10 points to the attack power of all of his allies during their turn if his player currently has at least three face-up Jugdral-affiliation bond cards.

If unit initiates combat or if foe's HP ≥ 75% at
start of combat, grants Atk/Spd/Def/Res+5 to
unit, unit makes a guaranteed follow-up attack,
and reduces damage from foe's first attack by
40% during combat ("first attack" normally
means only the first strike; for effects that
grant "unit attacks twice," it means the first and
second strikes), and restores 7 HP to unit
after combat.

At start of combat, if unit's HP ≥ 25%, grants
Atk/Spd/Def/Res+4 to unit, grants bonus to
unit's Atk/Spd/Def/Res = number of spaces
from start position to end position of whoever

of unit's Atk (excluding area-of-effect Specials),
and neutralizes foe's bonuses to Atk/Def (from
skills like Fortify, Rally, etc.) during combat.

【Canto (Rem. +1)】
After an attack, Assist skill, or structure
destruction, unit can move again.

The distance of the movement is the remaining
movement the unit had before the actions listed

them, the remainder is 0).

(Unit moves according to movement type. Once
per turn. Cannot attack or assist. Only highest
value applied. Does not stack. After moving,
if a skill that grants another action would be
triggered (like with Galeforce), Canto will
trigger after the granted action. Unit's base
movement has no effect on movement granted.
Cannot warp (using skills like Wings of Mercy)
a distance greater than unit would be able to
move with normal Canto movement.)

Trivia

  • Tyrfing's English name was leaked in the source code of theAwakening official website's page on SpotPass when it was updated on February 4, long before the sword itself was available in the game.[1]
  • Tyrfing bears a strong resemblance toFalchion in its design fromGenealogy of the Holy War andHeroes (matching Falchion's original design).
  • Despite first appearing in Chapter 5, the code that sets the Tyrfing's durability to 0 occurs after the intro timeline that plays when creating a new save file.
